AKG K401 Quickfacts

What it is:
Open design full size headphone with quite a beefy amplifier requirement.

Build and ergonomics:
Good build quality, mostly out of plastic. The housing and headband design is identical to the K500, K501, as well as the K301. The cloth pads covers the entire ear and are quite comfortable to wear. Minimal headband pressure means that the headphones sit very light on the head, and sound isolation is minimal.

Sound:
Open sound, very big soundstage, though smaller than the K500 and the K501. Midrange is a little recessed, but bass quantity is quite decent. Though the overall sound leans more toward bright, it’s not excessively bright and is quite livable for long term listening. Good speed, good instrument separation. Lower treble is more forward than the K500 and the K501, which would be preferable for some genres such as Rock. Though the overall the sound is very good, yet being the lower line up product, it is not as refined as the K501, and not as open as the K500.
