CLOSED: The Burson Headfonia Photo Contest

Burson and Headfonia are teaming up together to create the first ever photo contest in the headphone world. Take your best pictures and send it to [email protected] between November 1st to November 21st November 30 (extended) , 2011 to stand a chance to win Burson’s NEWEST HA-160DS DAC/Amp unit.

The theme, of course, is girls and headphones. We imagine you would pretty creative in setting up a shot of your best-looking model wearing your favorite headphone, because the point system will be decided based on these three aspects:

  1. Attractive girl in the photo. The more attractive, the higher the score (maximum score of 10). If you get several models then you get extra points, but the maximum score is still 10.
  2. Headphones. Yes, this is the tricky part. The rarer the headphones, the more vintage, the higher the points! So I guess Beats Studio is not going to score very high on this one. The score is not going to be related to the price of the headphone, so a $5,000 Stax SR-009 is not going to do much here. Again a maximum score of 10.
  3. Setting. A cool setting will also add points to the image. Don’t take a headshot photo since that’s not going to give you any points for the settings. The setting can be anywhere, but be creative since you can also score a maximum of 10 points on the setting.
  4. Extra point: follow Headfonia’s Twitter (@headfonia) and tweet this contest to get 2 extra points.

The Rules:

  • The contest is open to people worldwide.
  • You don’t need to own a Burson product, nor feature a Burson product in the picture to enter the contest.
  • Any headphones are allowed. Cool headphones, retro headphones will score extra points. This is not about expensive headphones. Just try to be original and cool
  • You can use Photoshop to enhance color and contrast, crop, and stuff, but you cannot photoshop in the headphone or the setting. Model + headphone + setting has to be a single original shot, no digital compositing.
  • You don’t need expensive equipment to take a picture. An iPhone Instagram picture can be just as cool and good.
  • Girls only in the picture.
  • No nudity or anything offensive.
  • You need a model release, or a document stating permission from the model that you have her permission to use the picture to enter this contest.
  • Burson and Headfonia reserves the right of the pictures submitted for promotional purposes.
  • In the case of a score tie, we will decide the winner.
  • If we have any doubt of the picture’s originality (that you indeed took the picture), you need to be able to submit a proof that you took the picture personally. A good way to do this is to take different versions of the shot you plan to submit.
  • Upon announcement of the winner, we will reveal the score of the top three pictures. However, only the winner is entitled to the prize of one Burson HA-160DS unit.
  • Any violation of these rules will disqualify your picture from the contest.
Guidelines for submission:
  • You can submit up to three different images.
  • Before you send the email to submit your images, go to Burson’s HA-160DS product page and copy and paste the product specifications to the email.
  • Please resize the images to a maximum width/height of 1000 pixels.

Guys, this is a contest for an $900 premium audio product. Give it your best shot!

Update: The gallery can now be found on our Facebook page. Go have look & like it! (Announcement about FB will follow later)

Update2: The contest is now closed. A winner will be announced next week. Thanks for the great pictures, it was a lot of fun. I have learned that a whole lot of people can not read submission guidelines 😀 We’ll keep you posted about the winner. thanks!

One more thing. I don’t think you have to be a photography genius to win the contest. Points are strictly taken based on the three aspects I mentioned, and really it doesn’t matter if you are using an Iphone or a 20 Megapixel digital camera to take the shot.

If you’ve been using Instagram on the Iphone I do think that their filters tend to make photos look better.

    Fun competition, question though:

Does the ‘creative setting’ need to also be a realistic listening setting?
For example (a stupid one so I don’t have to give away my awesome idea 😉 ):

“A Girl driving a vintage car with headphones on.”

Might look cool, but would be utterly unrealistic as far as listening (and of course safety on the road) is concerned…

So does creativity beat realism in the setting category?
Oh and in the headphone section does rarity beat age of the phone?

    • Reply October 18, 2011

      Lieven V

We’d like a cool setting, not necessarily a realistic one. Just don’t get yourself in trouble 😉

Rarity and Age will both give you good points imho. Mike?

    • Reply October 18, 2011

      Lieven V

That was clearly answered in the main post:

You can use Photoshop to enhance color and contrast and stuff, but you
cannot photoshop in the headphone or the setting. Model + headphone +
setting has to be a single original shot, no digital compositing.

I have dabbled a bit into photography and in my opinion a model/photographer contract can save me from a lot of trouble down the road. Though this will be my first model session, usually I avoid photographing people. Landscape for me is so much easier- you can freely be a jerk to it and it won’t mind. Models on the other hand… But sacrifices must be made for good audio, I’ll even shave my monster beard to not scare away the ladies.

    Cute girls?
What does have this to do with audiophilia or headphones? Are not girls supposed
to use good headphones anyway? I am a big fan of this page, I think
I have read every little article for the past year and they are my main source
of information concerning headphones, but this photo contest seems a bit sexist
to me, in my humble opinion!

    • Reply October 19, 2011

      Lieven V

If my mind serves me well, “headphone girls” originates from the Japanese culture. You can find lots of examples on Google. And I can assure you it’s not a sexist thing at all, it is just a popular item amongst the (younger?) audio crowd. We do not want to offend anyone so my safest advise to those offended is not to participate 😉

Hmm, I understand where you are coming from but I beg to differ. Girls get chosen to market cars , laptops and even food products at roadshows and advertisements as well and no one’s complaining. Well, sometimes guys get chosen instead as models. I think it really depends on the intended marketing strategies. I would think girls are more suitable for this predominantly male industry but hey, Sennheiser has soo many male celebrity endorsements and models for their products also. And it doesn’t in any way imply that girls don’t deserve good headphones, I think you might have read a little beyond the lines here.

Well, I certainly do not feel this fun activity to be derogatory in any way and my sister who is taking the picture is excited abt it as well 🙂 Just chill and have fun, who knows you might even win this to share with yr proud model. 😉

Exactly Mike, price has nothing to do with it, it could be a 1970 15USD on ear headphone that wins. It’s all about the pic and the x-factor and so

I hope you don’t mind me asking here but I’ve been struggling to find a single article which explains all of the connections in setting up a computer headphone setup for us complete newbies.
I’m interested in this 160ds and am wondering how I could go about connecting a PC, ps3 and some hand-me-down bose lifestyle powered speakers to this unit? I would want to be able to switch between my headphones and speakers easily. Perhaps I would I need an amp/dac with more connections?

I would imagine you need a receiver for all that, but first you need to dump Bose and get some Swans, Klipsch or Dayton budget speakers.

I see you added an extra point for following you on twitter (why not also Facebook :/ ?)… the thing is i don’t have an account. I could of course make one, but it wouldn’t have many followers, lol. On the other hand, my gf has an account (she will be my model!) and i could ask her to be my “ghost-twitter” :-), which i’m sure she’d love since she’s also digging headphones and headfonia. But would that be ok with you or do i have to have my own personal account?

So I just realized my Twitter account is set to private…but I’d like to keep it that way. I did an @Headfonia tweet about the contest but I’m not sure you guys can see it. Does it still count? 🙁

I also noticed submission guidelines that were recently added or that I missed. If I missed them, am I still eligible?

      • Reply November 20, 2011

        Lieven V

Imo, I don’t think it’s fair to give points to a closed twitter account. I’ll discuss it with Mike. What else did you miss then?

        • Reply November 21, 2011

          Jsitthi

          I missed the following:

Before you send the email to submit your images, go to Burson’s HA-160DS product page and copy and paste the product specifications to the email. Please resize the images to a maximum width/height of 1000 pixels. Were these guidelines added to the contest after the 14th? If so, that’s probably why I didn’t see them.

So does that mean I’m disqualified? Or should I resubmit following the proper guidelines?

You’re not disqualified, just mail me the burson specs
Can’t give you any twitter points though, but you’re still in the contest for sure

I have sent you my pictures. Te pictures were made on my birthday. The girls know what they were shot for. Do you need their consent? Is that a signed paper?
I have also twitted about the contest.

I think everybody is so excited about the contest that they forget to go to the Burson page, forget to send a model release form and forget to tweet about it… those are all points for your pictures so… it’s not too late yet. and we really do need a model release form 🙂

Thank you for the heads up. About the model release form.  Where can i find a draft?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have also found this release form: http://www.betterphoto.com/article.asp?id=37
Is this ok? The first one contains in the right corner a place to put an id. I would have to make stick over the pdf a photo. It can be done, but if not necessary i would like to skip that ( as i have to make an individual copy for each model, print it, have them completed, scan it and then sent).
        Thank you again.
Sorry i ask a lot of questions about this form, but this is the first time i have to deal with it.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just has to say we can use the pictures and that the model and photographer agree to it, releasing it to us

Please tell me if all is ok now.

        Thank you,

    The 2nd and 3rd winner don’t follow the rule……

–> (3) Setting. A cool setting will also add points to the image. Don’t take a headshot photo since that’s not going to give you any points for the settings. The setting can be anywhere, but be creative since you can also score a maximum of 10 points on the setting.
