Review: Aumeo Audio – Tailored Sound

MY EXPERIENCE

In my case, Aumeo seemed like a promising concept. General usage was very satisfying and easy to understand. Build quality is very good with the aluminum casing but not the same can be said for Bluetooth range. The range is poor due to the aluminum material and you can’t go much far from your device. Even in your living room (if the room is a little large) you can lose the connection by going away from your phone. The connection doesn’t break off completely, but the sound starts to go occasionally. So I think they need to work on that.

The device itself is quite small and it’s super portable. Volume wheel is a nice touch but can be a little sensitive in your pocket when you run or do some activity. When I compare it to other Bluetooth devices it’s really tiny and so easy to carry around. If only wireless range had been a little better…

Sound quality-wise Aumeo is very good, giving all the details and harmony even though it’s a Bluetooth device. I was expecting much worse than the actual source but that wasn’t the case. I tried other Bluetooth devices before and the sound quality was poor to me but not with Aumeo. They must’ve used a high quality converter inside. Still of course the sound is not at the same level as the direct output.

You can also hook up the Aumeo directly with the supplied 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable, hence you can use line-out connection. So Bluetooth is not an obligation. But weirdly, Bluetooth headphones are not supported. You can only use wired phones. I only used the Bluetooth connection for convenience, therefore I can’t comment whether there’s any difference in terms of sound quality.

I heard almost every frequency in the test on lowest possible volume. The only exception was the lowest frequency, which I couldn’t hear on min. volume with my right ear. I needed to boost the volume a notch and then I heard the sound. My left ear was OK. It’s really surprising to realize the difference between your left-right ears. I think of all it’s features, one of the important things about this product is that it makes you aware of your hearing.

Basically, the hearing test is to find the sensitivities differences between the frequencies. If the sensitivities between all the frequencies are the same, we do not process on the audio at all. Being “the same” means they are of the same value, they could be the min or max or anything in between.

If you hear every frequency in the test on min. volume (like I almost did), than that means the device won’t change anything in the sound. If you hear every frequency on the same exact volume, again it doesn’t change anything. It will only make DSP adjustments if you have trouble hearing some frequency, so the measuring procedure important to get efficiency from the device.

The battery life is 6 hours on Bluetooth and 8 hours on wired connection in theory, but to be realistic, I think it’ll go around 5 hours on Bluetooth and 6 on wired at most. If you leave the device open it discharges quickly so take a notice. It can be charged with any micro-USB cable by the way, so no special connectors or anything.

Aumeo can be very useful for İphone 7 users in my opinion. Because the phone doesn’t have a headphone jack (I still can’t believe how on earth they did that) people can use this device to have 3 things: Use their wired headphones with İphone 7, have a good quality sound for their ears and have the convenience of the device to easily use their phones. Very nice.

Also, it can be a savior to the people who have hearing problems, or imbalance between their ears. It helps you to determine the frequencies that you have trouble with and the device sets the needed settings for you.

BOTTOM LINE

Overall, I think Aumeo is a very useful device. You can use it as a Bluetooth device alone and enjoy the convenience in your pocket, and you can have a customized sound for your own. Also it’s a good thing to test your hearing on multiple frequencies and see if your ears need some care or not.

Some things need to be improved, such as wireless range and battery life. I heard from the Aumeo team that they want to make some advancements on the product, but nonetheless, this can be a game changing device about personal audio.

Special thanks to Ria Romano from RPR Public Relations for her helpful and kind attitude, and thanks to Aumeo team for answering my questions about the device.
