Audeze Penrose Review

Specifications

For the nit-pickers and nerdy ones here, I’m giving the specs and technical sheets. For all the others, you can just go to the next page to see how the Penrose performs.

Planar Magnetic Drivers

Despite its gaming background, the Audeze Penrose is a true planar in and out.

Planar magnetic headphones all share specific traits, and one of them is very large drivers. The Penrose remains true to its lineage, housing an “audiophile-grade” 100 mm wide driver. And if that’s still smaller than the LCD-4 106 mm wide drivers, that is still bigger than the driver found in the mighty Sennheiser HD800S (!)

Inside, Audeze integrated all of their in-house patented technologies, such as :

  • – Uniforce Ultra-Thin diaphragm, with super low distortion
  • – Fluxor magnet array, that works like wave-guide
  • – Fazor, found in all Audeze LCD Flagship to lower the needed drive power

Quite a feat for a $/€299 headphone, designed for gamers!

That alone is already amazing in my opinion.

Integrated DAC and DSP + Dual band Connection

So you know the basics, the Audeze Penrose is Bluetooth compatible and embeds its own DAC. But did you know there is more?

In fact, the Penrose comes with a new 2.4GHz low-latency dongle that enables lag-free, lossless transmission. A neat feature, enabling cross-platform connectivity with devices such as Playstation, Xbox, Switch, or even old consoles and devices.

I tried it on a Google Nexus 7, whose Bluetooth was not working anymore, and as soon as I hooked the dongle, the tablet immediately recognized the Penrose. Quite impressive! And, for those who prefer Bluetooth, the headphone also supports most protocols like AAC and aptX.

Of course, the Penrose can also be connected to any computer or digital source, with the provided USB dongle. If it doesn’t get Audeze high-end Cypher DSP for 3D audio rendering, the Penrose still works as a wireless DAC+Amp+headphone system. And a pretty good one as we’ll see afterward.

Thanks to Audeze HQ – not available on iOS for now, unfortunately – you have lots of settings available to unlock the full potential of this headphone. You can setup up to five different audio presets, choose the auto-shutdown delay, activate sidetone or adjust the level of game/voice ratio you want to get while you play.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. Even after more than 10 years of experience, Nanotechnos still collects all gear he gets, even his first MPMAN MP3 player. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing(ly boring) numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.

    Hey thanks for the review,

I am currently looking for a replacement for my mobius as the left ear pad arch is almost broken off (out of warranty) and the biggest problem I have with the mobius is the constant hiss of the amlifier which is oversized in my opinion. I usually listen at sound level of 4/6 (out of 100) on windows. Because I am sensitive to that and hear it almost constantly my ears get tired and start to hurt quite quickly which is a big problem during covid having so many online lectures and other things online ( I am a student).

So my question if you noticed any difference regarding the amplifier compared to the mobius

    Cheers
    Tobi
