CANJAM CANJAM CANJAM: Nr°3!

Yes, it’s that time again. Only one more month and Canjam Europe IS BACK!

Canjam Europe 2015 is the 3rd edition already and I wouldn’t miss it  for the world. Each year Canjam has gotten bigger and this year an unseen number of “Brands” will be represented at the two-daily show. Unseen as in 100 brands. 100!!

Later this month there’s also a CANJAM London show, organized by Head-fi, and completely unrelated to the Europe show. Personally I don’t really understand why one organizes a “European show” across the canal/not on the mainland. And that’s exactly why Canjam Europe in Essen Germany is so much more interesting for me.

If you have no idea what I am talking about you should check out the reports of the previous two shows, I’m sure you’ll want to be there. Not convinced yet?

In one, or two days if you want, you can:

* Talk to developers and product managers at many of the show’s booths and listen to the experts at the free workshop and seminar program.

* Check out the University Niederrhein’s engineering program concerning production engineering of headphones using 3D printers

* See and listen to premiering new products at the show

* Try and compare literally hundreds of headpones, amplifiers, sources and other mobile hifi devices

* Meet yours truly in person (I’m the one wearing the Headfonia shirts)

So yes, you really have to visit Canjam Essen on Saturday and/or Sunday September 26 & 27!

Still not convinced? Then check out the list of brands on the next Page or on Canjam’s page

See you there and do come say hello to me!

    Missed Mrspeakers, I think

It would be nice if someone could do an in-depth comparison of the $1000 Alpha Dog 2, and his new $1500 headphone.

Yeah, haven’t seen much on that cuz ppl keep saying that the drivers are different, so there is no comparison to be made. I guess there isn’t much to be said, though. One is old tech and closed when the other is an original designed open back.

The $600 Alpha Dog is arguably old tech even though the earcups were 3D printed, but “in my considered opinion”, when you make a new Alpha Dog and raise the price to $1000, that really needs a comparison to flagship headphones, *especially* MrSpeakers’ $1500 headphone. I don’t see a new headphone that costs $1000 as a throwaway.

I didn’t mean that at all, I just meant that it would’ve been like comparing an lcd 3 to an HD 800. They’re just gonna be really different. I love my alpha dogs and old tech is awesome.

If they’re both high fidelity then they should not be “really different”.

Not in terms of detail retrieval, but different in terms of presentation and frequency response. They are both great headphones, I’m sure, but if high fidelity headphones weren’t fairly differentiated, there would be no reason to have a bunch of flagships in the market. They’re really different in the design of the headphone is all I meant. A lot of people try to avoid comparing the alpha prime to something like an lcd 2 or he-6, not because the lcd 2 and he-6 are leagues better, but because it’s closed vs open and the differences between closed and open are already well documented. The only thing they might really share is the MrSpeakers house sound(which I’m loving), but I can’t see the presentation being similar at all. Just my thoughts; sorry if I irritated you at all.

From what you’re saying here you already know the exact differences in sound. Now personally, I don’t care all that much about someone’s idea of ‘presentation’ or other such nebulous terms. But I can tell what a person means when they say the bass is elevated in some audible way, or the treble is either peaky or falls off the board above 9 khz (like the original AD). Now we could say “that’s just frequency response”, but it’s not just that. The sound is a total thing, and a bass emphasis that’s smooth enough might pass as a very mild emphasis, not a bother at all, while a bass emphasis that interacts with a nearby recess might sound way worse. It’s a total thing that’s very complex, but after a lot of listening time most of the significant aspects of the sound should be apparent, compared to other headphones. So a good thorough comparison of the $1000 and $1500 headphones should reveal a lot about what MrSpeakers is designing into them, and the prices merit that comparison (or comparisons if you wish).

No, sorry if I came off that way, but I haven’t tried the primes or ETHER. I get what you’re saying though; maybe there’s a comparison somewhere in head fi or something. It’d be nice to know which I should upgrade to in the future. Again, sorry for over generalizing. I’m still pretty new to the audio world and I’m not the best with the terminology.

Thanks – I do get that the ether is ‘new’ technology, but I’m really skeptical if you know what I mean.

Lieven, London CanJam is an officially endorsed Head-Fi event organised by Jude Mansilla and team. This European `CanJam’ misappropriated the CanJam moniker without permission and operates entirely independently of Head-Fi. London CanJam is an event held for audio enthusiasts run by audio enthusiasts, whereas the European CanJam is altogether more commercialised and more akin to a trade show.

I know the London event is by Head-fi, no secret to that, it’s in my post. I know there have been discussions about the Canjam name but all that is none of my business and I couldn’t really care what the names of the events are.

Canjam Europe is also an event held for audio enthusiasts run by audio enthusiasts. Have you compared entry fees and table fees of both venues? I think you’ll be very surprised…

Does CanJam Europe have an area specifically set aside for attendees to showcase their personal audio gear? Just curious, as it just appears to be halls full of trade stalls at first glance.

Do the brands/stores represented there offer interesting deals on existing gear (for example some audeze headphones)? Or is it more about showing what’s new?

    • Reply August 8, 2015

      Headfonia_L.

It’s mostly about showing what is new and what is still available, it’s not a sales event but I have on occasions seen people order units or buy show units at the end of the show

Thanks! Somehow it seems like a big step for a relative newbie like me to go to such an event. I wonder how it will affect my developing upgraditis 😉

If you select items based on aesthetics or visible features and specs, you’ll get good info at the show. But listening at the show will give only an approximation of what you’ll hear at home when relaxed and it’s very quiet. I’ve heard many headphones in stores and venues that sounded very exciting, but at home their faults became apparent.

last year was my first visit and a a newbie in the headphone gear. It was great fun and I got lots of impressions. Based on the impressions I developped some upgraditis and after that I did lots of research and listening etc. It is definitely a walhalla of great inspiration.

Hi Nickjan – how great and thanks. I love both the H6 and the Meier Classic. Are you going to get the ff-upgrade to your Meier Classic? I am for sure and if I can wait that long I will bring my Daccord and Classic to CanJam to have Jan Meier do the upgrade. See you in Essen 🙂

hey, I didn’t know yet about the upgrade. I ll have to check it out, find some reviews first. I ll have to consider either upgrade or save for some other gear like a Daccord (I dont have a dedicated DAC yet). Maybe I ll wait for Canjam to hear the difference or do the same as you if thats possible. Anyway, great tip, thanks.

I have made my list of things I have to listen to at CanJam.de:

    1) iBasso D14
    2) Meier Corda Classic vs. Corda Classic ff
    3) Beyerdynamic T1v1 vs. T1v2
    4) Unique Melody CIEMs
    5) InEars StageDiver – need to refresh my memory of the SD2 from last year.
    6) Mr. Speakers Ether
    7) OPPO HA-2
    8) RHA S500i + (maybe the new DacAmp if they bring a prototype?)
    9) Rhines CIEMs
    10) Shure SE846

Do I have any serious omissions or should I just let the show surprise me?
I know that time will fly away so it is always good to stick to a tight schedule or else…. 🙂

I wish Cosmic Ears would participate at CanJam.de.

Someone should convince them to be there or offer some universal demo-units for testing… 😉

Oh – I need to listen to the new Beyerdynamic + Astell & Kern IEM. I hope it will be there as well.

Last year Ultimate Ears were present by their German distributor. I cannot seem to find them in the list of exhibitors this time? Am I wrong or will they not be presenting at CanJam.de?

Now only two more days… 😀

The BeoPlay H3 was today released in a new version with Active Noise Cancelling:

For those interested – I have been able to get one for loan to bring with me to Canjam in Essen this Saturday. Find me there if you want to listen. I can only say they are better now than the original H3, which I never liked.
