Fiio E9 Video Review

Dave from DeckhandDavy makes nice video reviews on YouTube. And they happen to cover a lot of products that I think we are all interested in. So I thought that with Dave’s permission, I’m going to start linking his video reviews on Headfonia. This is the first one, and it’s on the Fiio E9.

Please visit DeckhandDavy‘s Channel on YouTube to see more Gear Unboxing and Review Videos. Keep up the good job, Dave!

Thanks, Mike for featuring my video on your amazing site!! Looks like FiiO beat me to the chase! You'll absolutely love your E9, I know I do. Word of caution….if you never remove your AKG K701's from this amp, please don't hold me responsible 🙂

Also, please stay tuned to my channel as I will be releasing a couple new reviews on the the HiFiMan HM601 DAP and MP4 Nations exciting new Brainwavz M1 earphones. Just a heads up, although a tad too bass heavy, the M1's are the best bang-for-the-buck purchase for near audiophile earphones on the market today. Good stuff!

Compared to your in depth first and sound impressions, I find the video a bit shallow on what I would like to know about E9.. I enjoy reading impressions on how they would sound like as compared to an unboxing video and a few impressions on the box, unit, etc..

I am sorry but I don't think the video is a review..

    Still, thanks for sharing.

Hi Carlo, thanks for writing. Davy did the video review, not me. But thanks for the input, I'm sure that Davy will appreciate it.

Thanks Carlo for the input. I don't include personal impressions on my reviews because there is a whole lot of written reviews already out there and perhaps many more qualified reviewers than myself…I guess you could call my unboxings 'overviews'? 🙂

I review the aesthetic part of audiophile and headphone equipment and find it just as important as the sound signature that it produces. I enjoy covering the aspects that excite the other senses and try my best to convey that to film. I do understand where you are coming from and although I don't think I have the 'golden ear', plan on including my personal impressions on upcoming video reviews. Please keep an eye out for my new reviews which will include this!

      Thanks again for watching. 🙂

    Hey Mike,
Before 2011, I'm considering purchasing the Sennheiser HD 800, mainly for use with the FiiO E7/E9 combo, and I've read and from various articles and people that the HD 800 really starts to perform well with the highest quality amps.
I read on this site that you're posting a FiiO E9 review, and wondered if you've tried it with the HD 800 and if so, how you rate the HD 800 with the E9 (and poss E7 combo) as compared to other amps.
    Many thanks,
    Windsor

Hi Windsor, the HD800 is very demanding of a good source. I don't think you should pair it with an E9. 🙂

The E9/E7 is a good product, but it's an entry level DAC/amp combo. Something like the Burson HA160D would be more fitting for the HD800.

Hey Mike, I hear ya about the Burson.

It think it could be worth acting upon some HD 800 offers I've seen though, and if it feels right, I'll most probably do so with a view to upgrading my amp in the future.

But in the meantime, I'm grateful for the HD 600 that are on their way to me. 🙂

Thanks for the words of advice. 🙂

The HD600 is a really fun headphone. In some ways it's more fun than the HD800. 🙂

I think the main selling point with the Burson is that currently there are very few alternatives of a good desktop amp/DAC combinations that does things just right. Sure, you can probably get a Lavry DA11 and get a better DAC section. But the Burson sounds just right, and for a "right" pricetag as well.

if you have easy to drive cans like mine (M-50, HD25-1) the E7’s amp section will suffice IMO…

actually, adding the E9 for these type of cans will yield little to no improvements other than the placebo effect of “headroom”…

i had the E9 but sold it after about 3 weeks…

but if the cans you are using are the notoriously difficult to drive ones like K701 or the 600 ohms DT880, then its a different story altogether…

Actually I was testing the E9 with the M-50 and AIAIAI TMA-1, and I was quite suprised to hear how big of an improvement it was, especially in the soundstage area.

        hey mike…

good for you then… is your M-50 the old or the new one? are you using the E9 woth the E7?

i used the one with the old drivers with the E7 docked to its big brother… the soundstage (at least to me) was the same as it was directly plugged to the E7’s amp section… i dunno much about the aiaiai but with the hd25-1, i really sensed little improvement…

im looking forward to recabling the senn badboy to do balanced with the toucan as you hav suggested…:) i feel its the best direction to go to make it sound even better…

its just so perfect with my type of music…

I'm using the new M-50 with the E7+E9… with the HD25-1, I think its drivers may have reacted differently with the E7+E9 combo, hence the small improvements. Perhaps I can give a more thorough evaluation when I post the full review. 🙂
