FiiO FF3 – Review

Specifications

For the nitpickers and nerdy ones here, I’m giving the specs and technical sheets. For all the others, you can just go to the next page to see how the FiiO FF3 performs.

Beryllium-plated diaphragm + PU gasket

With the FiiO FF3, the brand introduces its widest diaphragm yet: a 14.2mm wide dynamic driver, packed with a lot of new features.

First and foremost, the diaphragm gets beryllium plated done, like the one found on the FD7. Highly rigid yet lightweight, this plating reduces unwanted vibration and thus, unwanted distortion, for the best experience, even with earbuds. Upstream, FiiO also uses a whole new driver’s gasket, specially designed for this super-large driver, for a more detailed and textured low-end.

Talking about low-end, I’ve to outline how large this new transducer is: 14.2mm. Even compared to the previous FD7/FD5/FD3, this makes the FiiO FF3 the most endowed earphone from all of the brand’s range. A driver so big, that FiiO had to develop a whole new vent to ensure optimal airflow at the rear-end of the earphone, allowing the FF3 to reproduce frequencies as low as 90Hz in regular condition, and 44.5Hz with deep insertion.

Finally, at the heart of the transducer, you’ll find an ultra-fine copper-clad aluminum Japanese Daikoku voice coil – a long name to say that the magnet sports a super-fine coil, just shy of 0.033mm wide. On paper, that should ensure faster moves and further improve treble resolution, like what you have with the FiiO FA7s or FDx series.

316L stainless steel + 3rd generation industrial design

If visually, the FiiO FF3 looks like your classic earbuds, there is more to this than meets the eye.

In fact, the FiiO FF3, like the FA7S, is one of the first earphones from the brand to benefit from the brand-new production line. From top to bottom, those ears are absolutely flawless and the use of 316L steel instead of aluminum gives a real presence, especially in hand.

Carefully polished then PVD electroplated, those new models look simply gorgeous under the grazing light, even more with the geometric faceplate on the back. This one is enhanced by a tempered glass cover, which seems to magnify the triangular shape and bi-tone finish of the plate.

In the middle, slightly hidden, you’ll also find the small vent, dedicated to pressure release, echoing the one found upfront, mimicking the old “earbuds” design. It’s sort of retrofuturistic, and, if I was not fond of this design at first, the FF3 kind of grew on me over time. Plus, I really love the small stems that make them easy to install/remove, in your ears.

A nice curiosity!

Bundle

Inside the box

The FiiO FF3 comes with a dire bundle. In the box, you get:

  • the FiiO FF3
  • two terminations with 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs
  • a crystal case
  • 12 bass foam tips, 12 balanced foam tips, 12 vocal foam tips

A basic bundle that put the FF3 more in line with the JD3 than the FD3 Pro.

Additional accessories

Honestly, the FiiO FF3 comes with everything you might need. So, the only thing that you could add, would be a good DAC or DAP. Personally, I chose the FiiO KA3 as my main source and the FiiO M17 on the go (or almost), but any audiophile source should make it work.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. Even after more than 10 years of experience, Nanotechnos still collects all gear he gets, even his first MPMAN MP3 player. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing(ly boring) numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.
