Overall User Experience
Setting up the FiiO SP3 BT is a quick and straightforward process. Begin by plugging in the DC power supply, and linking the two speakers with the provided cable. Then connect the main speaker to your audio source. If there’s no sound initially, toggle the input buttons to ensure the correct input is selected. I even connected the SP3 BT directly to my MacBook, and it worked flawlessly.
Next, adjust the volume level on the back of the main speaker and then control the volume from your source. The bass knob, which ranges from -8dB to 0dB, can be tweaked to suit your preferences.
You have the option to choose between 0° rubber pads or 7° inclined pads for the base of the speakers. While this might seem like a minor detail, the inclined pads significantly enhance the soundstage, making it wider and better defined, particularly in a PC desktop setup. Paired with an R7 or R9 on a clean desktop, the SP3 BT offers a versatile and compact audio solution.

The RGB lighting feature, though not essential, adds a distinctive touch to the SP3 BT. Although you can’t sync the LEDs with your music, you can switch between various lighting modes, which is a cool feature if you enjoy visual effects.
Additionally, the ”FiiO Control” application allows you to connect to the speakers from your phone and manage various settings, including software updates and EQ features. While it would have been great to control the volume from the app, this feature is not available.
Sound General
The FiiO SP3 is impressive out of the box. The default signature is well-balanced across the frequency spectrum. The engineers’ work on the crossover and filtering is evident, as the transition between frequencies is good, with no single range massively overpowering another. The treble and midrange, in particular, maintain a harmonious balance.
I liked the fact that FiiO didn’t choose a fun type of sound with the SP3. Considering the target consumer (PC users and gamers) I expected a V-shaped, rather colourful sound with massive bass and very vibrant tonality. I’m surprised by the neutrality and balance, which are close to studio reference speakers, in terms of tonality.

Despite the small size and the limited separation between the speakers, the SP3 delivers a good soundstage performance with a 3D effect. The speakers perform admirably even when positioned straight, without needing to be angled towards the listener.
This balanced performance, combined with its compact and sleek design, makes the SP3 a strong contender in the entry-level desktop speaker market. Its ability to deliver near-studio reference quality sound in a small package is a noteworthy achievement.
Sound Classics
Lows: The FiiO SP3’s lows are on the lighter side, especially if the bass knob remains untouched. Those seeking deep, rumbling bass might find the SP3 lacking, particularly in the sub-bass frequencies. While the bass-reflex design improves performance when placed near a wall, the low end maintains a flat and neutral profile. Over time, listeners may appreciate the realistic presentation, although increasing the bass knob can inject some desired punch for those seeking excitement.

Mid-range: The mid-range of the SP3 is neutral, with minimal colouration, offering decent layering and dynamics. The resolution is commendable, and there’s ample space, with respectable separation and transparency. However, the mid-range timbre may leave something to be desired, occasionally sounding slightly honky. Improvement in this area could provide more emotion and texture to instruments, as the mid-range isn’t the SP3’s strongest aspect.
Treble: The treble performance of the SP3 BT shines as its most impressive feature, characterized by a technically proficient and controlled presentation that avoids excessive brightness. Despite its energetic nature, the treble maintains impressive extension, especially when paired with a high-quality source. It offers delightful crispiness, with excellent definition and abundant detail. The treble exhibits good resolution, extending highs and providing ample airiness to the soundstage. With a clear and open sound, the treble contributes to an immersive listening experience. Yet, I think the treble could’ve been a bit less energetic so the mid-range could appear more in the sound picture, but most of the time the treble steals the show.

What was the codec used when judging bluetooth audio quality? Don’t get why was it omitted as it can be very important asterisk to BT quality.
