About iFi NEO iDSD 2

The iFi NEO iDSD 2 is a versatile desktop DAC/Amplifier that is an all-in-one solution for various audio needs. Introduced as the successor to the original NEO iDSD, which debuted in 2021 as “the ultimate desktop system,” this second generation brings enhancements and new features.

iFi Audio, renowned for its reliable DAC/Amp products, designed the NEO iDSD as a unique offering in its lineup. With the NEO iDSD 2, they aim to deliver an even more comprehensive and powerful desktop device.

 Amplification:
  • Much more powerful amplifier section compared to the original model.

Internals

Under the hood, the NEO iDSD 2 features iFi Audio’s “PureWave” circuit design, known for its short, direct signal paths. The components are carefully selected from reputable manufacturers such as Murata, TDK, Texas Instruments, and MOSFET, ensuring top-notch quality. iFi Audio’s meticulous approach to component selection and circuit design is evident here.

The amplifier section boasts a continuous power output of over 5,551 mW into 32 ohms, available through the balanced headphone socket. This is an impressive upgrade for this version. If you have power-hungry headphones, be sure to use a 4.4mm balanced cable to take full advantage of the NEO iDSD 2’s capabilities.

Packaging

The unit arrives in a medium-sized rectangular box. The package is very similar to previous offerings. You get the device on the top and accessories on the bottom cardboard boxes. The boxes store an RCA cable, a  USB cable, a remote controller,  and some paperwork. There’s also a 6.3 nice mm adapter. The box also stores a stand that you can mount to the NEO iDSD 2 to put it in a vertical position.

The presentation of the package is very good and a bit more impressive than the iDSD Signature series. It works perfectly as I didn’t see any deformations from shipping. However, I think iFi should supply a longer USB cable for different desktop scenarios.

Design and Build

Appearance-wise, the iFi Audio NEO iDSD 2 retains much of the same aesthetic as its predecessor: futuristic yet authentic. The original NEO featured a groundbreaking design that was a significant refresh, and the second version followed in those footsteps. The device sports a beautiful silver aluminium finish, and the combination of the volume knob and TFT screen enhances its overall look.

However, I prefer the original NEO iDSD’s design. It was more streamlined, seamless, simpler, and cleaner. The new 5-button array on the second generation makes the device look busier, and I believe iFi could have implemented the new buttons in a cooler way. That said, I appreciate the larger screen on the new model.

iFi also replaced the external wireless antenna with an internal one, which resulted in a plastic area for BT signals. This change somewhat detracts from the original streamlined design. The build quality is excellent. The volume knob feels sturdy and is made from aluminium. The chassis gives a solid and durable impression, as do the inputs and outputs.
