Moondrop Stellaris Review

Comparisons

Much better bass in the Shozy here, and the mids are also denser with more musicality. The Stellaris gives more emphasized treble when compared, and its sounds are wider in terms of the sound stage. However, the Shozy has a better tonality and it’s more controlled.

It also has a more comfortable fit. But the sound part goes to the Shozy in my book. In terms of package content, design and build quality, the Moondrop offering triumphs easily though.

IDUN 2.0 is one of my favourite budget-fi IEMs. It has a good unboxing experience for the price, just like the Stellaris. The build quality of the Stellaris is better, with more impressive premium shells with a full aluminium finish. Yet, the IDUN fits more comfortably.

Sound-wise the IDUN Golden is more coherent, balanced, natural and layered. The sound has a better body, timbre and bass quality. The Stellaris has a more airy staging, more focused imaging, and more transparency. So if I look at it purely from a technical standpoint, the Stellaris is certainly impressive. But again, when it comes down to tonality, balance, coherency and realistic presentation, I find the Idun Golden better.

Conclusion

The Moondrop Stellaris is a fantastic IEM for the price in terms of technical performance. I think Moondrop has a very competitive package with this planar driver, but only if it’s going to be improved more. The technical performance is excellent so that part is covered. Now it should come to improving the overall balance, bass response and mid-range timbre.

If they manage to accomplish those aspects, they can even ask for a higher price, and it’d still be a killer in my opinion. I’m sure Moondrop will eventually release a better version. It looks like the planar driver technology in IEMs will spread out. If you look at the success they’ve made with their budget IEMs, there’s more to come from Moondrop.

Pros:
  • Great Technical Performance
  • Transparency
  • Fantastic Build for Money
Cons
  • Textureless, Lifeless Bass
  • Timbre Issues
  • Unbalanced, Incoherent Presentation
  • Borderline Aggressive Trebke

A keen audiophile and hobby photographer, Berkhan is after absolute perfection. Whether it is a full-frame camera or a custom in-ear, his standpoint persists. He tries to keep his photography enthusiasm at the same level as audio. Sometimes photography wins, sometimes his love for music takes over and he puts that camera aside. Simplistic expressions of sound in his reviews are the way to go for him. He enjoys a fine single malt along with his favourite Jazz recordings.

At first alot of reviewers were bashing this set when it came out, especially since there are so many planar sets out and the competition is so intense…but I have seen other reviewers burn them in and say they are excellent. Hmmmm…I am leaning on the burn in being the trick
