Hi Headfonia,
I have been avid reader of your writings and it always been an insightful and entertaining readings I must say, congrats and may success continues with you.
In this occasion, kindly shed me a light the comparison between 64 audio Nio and Tia Trio
My understanding about bit-perfect is that it’s a perfect digital copy of another file (unless you’re talking about a bitstream). Computers have long used CRC and other methods to insure perfect copies. CD rippers use “verify” features to make sure a CD is ripped perfectly.
But a DAC changes bits to analog, and there the concept of bit perfect is nebulous. The main thing I understand about DACs is that they don’t want to lose any bits, and they want the bits perfectly sync’d (i.e., no jitter).
Hi, I’d like an opinion on your part. I have SHURE se846, amp ALO CDM, player AK300 and Focal Elear. I would to change everything with the following devices but for that I need your opinion. Are better the HIFI RE2000/AKT8iE MKII than my SHURE se846? How plays the headset Bayerdynamic Xelento and the UNIQUE MELODY ME1? Are better Chord Mojo than my CDM? How play the new VORZÜGE DUOII? Is good the player Sony NW-WM1A? I love music with deep bass, long and with details. I like also mids warm. Excuse me if I don’t write well. Thanks in advance.
Paolo from VENICE (Italy)
Dear all,
I’m about to acquire NW WM1A ! Is it possible (and how) to connect it to my HiFi system as s source/DAC ?
Amp – Vitus Audio

Do you have any recommendation for an IEM that has at least 40ohm impedance and a price tag of less then 150$?
I’m yet to find such creature (exept from maybe the good old VSonic GR07) and my shanling m2s really struggles with the sensitive ones (yes, even those with a dynamic driver).
I did notice the sudden comeback of these little bastards, but I’m kind of afraid by the fit of those (although, as most people i guess, the last earbuds i wore were from dumbphone crappy kind).
Hi.
I have an integrated amp with analog and digital inputs with a great built in DAC. The Hegel H80. There is no audio out from the Hegel. I want to add a headphone amp to my stereo (one of the the bottlehead diy). I need to get some sort of switch or preamp that has 2 line outputs so I wouldn’t have to keep plugging unplugging between the amps. Any recommendations?
Hello Headfonia, Greetings…!
Hope you are well…! Your reviews are really awesome. I would like to get few of my doubts clarified from you. I’m planning to buy Beyerdynamic Amiron Home or HD650. I’m already have Chord Mojo. Do we need additional amplifier to drive these headphone along with chord mojo? Or mojo will be fair enough to handle this headphones…if we need additional amplifier please suggest few…
For most music you should be OK, but if some of your music does not seem to have the proper bass impact, then more power may be needed. Especially with the HD650.
Hi…
I Plan to buy DAP. I like jazz, audiophile, pop and instrumental.
I have 3 choices, Sony NW-A45 & Fiio X3 Mark III or Cayin N3.
Please help which one is better and recommendation?

Hello,
In Mike’s informative item on OSX Audio players from 2012 which I have just read, the top three for SQ appear to be Sonic Studio followed by Audirvana and Pure Music.
Is this still your recommendation?
(I play local files and Spotify Premium through a Macbook Pro with HRT Microstreamer.)
Audirvana Plus is the one I see that’s recommended most, and as for other software, a lot has changed in 6 years. Audirvana looks like a one-time fee from what I see, whereas other music players require constant repayment every month or year.
Audirvana requires an Internet connection, so that means they want to register your actual computer. It might be difficult when changing computers to transfer the ‘license’ to another computer. It also has implications for DRM for purchased files, but that would not apply to streaming.
Hello Nick, I do have both Audirvana and Amarra (Sonic Studio). In my opinion (which of course is subjective) Audirvana has a more “analogue” or so you wish “natural sound” sound and I’m a very satisfied user for years now.
Audirvana is indeed a one time buy with from time to time an affordable upgrade.
I love this site-a ton of great information! I am in search of a good “all around” IEM. One that will perform as a stage IEM but also something I can use to sit back and listen to music with on my iphone 7 and possibly a DAP in the near future. My budget is about $1k. Among a bunch of various headphones (AT ATH-M50X, 1More Triple, UE900S Reshells, Bose QC35, Beats PowerBeats 3 all for different uses-airplane travel, gym, etc) I currently use Westone UM 20 Pros that were reshelled by InEarz as my stage monitor and at home IEM. A few years on I’m not getting the seal I’d really like and would like to “upgrade” the drivers anyway. I play acoustic guitar and use a wireless pack from a dedicated monitor mix channel. I listen to acoustic, blues, rock and folk music. A lot of guitars. I am leaning more towards a Universal IEM rather than the custom route and am focusing in on the Shure SE846, UM Pro 50, Campfire Andromeda and the A&K/JH Angie SE. Any input on a good all arounder that will work well with these different input sources? Sorry for the long post.
[email protected] i wonder if anyone with pxc 450 by sennheiser has ever experienced the headphones actually amplifying ambient noise rather than canceling it? does this occur when they get old? what can i do?
Can you check the microphone inputs and see if they are clean and free of dirt? When the noise increases, the NC circuit might be compensating for something. Cords can cause problems too.
Hi Lieven, do you know how the Hiby R3 and the Onkyo DP-S1 and Cowon Plenue D compare?
I prefer a balanced sound that is versatile to cover genres like classical orchestra, jazz, to rock and pop so detail retrieval and extension are important. Warm or cold doesn’t matter although between both I prefer a warmer sound.
I noticed they were all reviewed at some point so hope you can help 🙂
Hi, another reviewer found that the R3:
“”R3 sounds comparable to Fiio X7II: which means balanced sound just a bit less stage (width maybe) than X7II”
“R6 is slightly bassier than R3 and better 3D”
Is this similar to what you found, as I think you mentioned the R3 is a bit warmer and forward.
First of all you need to know what AM module the X7II had, only then could one compare. But in general I wouldn’t say the 7ii and R3 are alike, au contraire.
Hi Lieven, you mentioned that R3 is similar in sound to X5iii – could you elaborate a little? Also, Marcus mentioned he found the R3 to be without the treble glare that some older SABRE 9018 DAPs (R3 is 9028) used to have. Did you pick this up too when listening?
Hello! Been a long follower of your page and always loved your reviews so thanks for that! 😉 ( Facebook like is already placed 🙂 )
So I have a dac/ amp question and would love your advice!
I currently have an Aune S16 and Colorfly C4.
I’m trying to build a pre endgame setup for around 2k and I think about getting either the Hugo 2, the rme adi2, the Sony TA-ZH1EL or the Beyerdynamic A2 ( I excluded some like the wa7 because of availability in Germany) .
Maybe you could help me because I’m rather lost and want the best I can get for the money. My main cans are the lovely T1 and LCD2C.
Kind regards
Zeus Bower
Hi,
I would like to know what you guys would recommend more. I generally listen to all genres of music, on my phone, laptop and turntable with audiophiles. I have maximum 700Euros to spend, and id like to know what you guys recommend.
I have been thinking of either getting the -Noble Sage or the -RHA CL1 + RHA DACAMP L1.
I know that it is a weird comparison, but I can get the RHA combo for 650 euros, which is why I am considering it.
I am fairly open top any other suggestions and recommendations.
Hey! A bit of an unusual question in that its premise is decidedly non-audiophile: without the time necessary to re-rip my CD collection to lossless, I now listen almost elusively to Spotify. My PC setups are good-enough for this (Schiit Jotunheim DAC/Amp -> HD650s, or Schiit Bifrost -> Schiit Magni3 -> Audio Technica M50), but I am interested in one-upping my IEM game.
I got a DragonFly Red (upgraded from the Black after reading your review, in fact!) to use with my phone. Spotify streams and downloads are always set to the highest-possible quality.
Here’s the issue: I’ve weird ears and often struggle with IEMs to get a good seal. Additionally (gross detail incoming): my ears react to their intrusion by doing what they do best, protecting themselves. You get what I mean.
I was wondering if going with a low-end Custom IEM would fix my issue:
* Better fit
* Less volume needed = less ear reactions
* Less high-end = less risk of focusing on source defects
I understand that CIEMs come in all form and shape… and typically both form and shape are expensive.
You’ve reviewed some interesting ones for much cheaper: some from SE Asia, and even the US offers some ‘budget’ CIEMs (InEarz P350s for example).
I AM attempting to not go deeper in this rabbit hole; not have to scrounge the world for hi-res files or re-rip my hundreds of CDs. But I AM also attempting to find THE best solution here, and it may involve thinking a bit outside the proverbial box, and into the literal mold.
Asking this to you, Headfonia; based on your experience(s), does this even sound useful?
Would even low-end CIEMs be too detailed? (note: the same file on Spotify Extreme or FLAC yielded no discernable differences through my HD650s. I consider myself rather blessed for this!)
I will also buy Sennheiser HD650 because its very high on your recommendation list.
I usually listen to do music ( portable ) with: Samsung S8+ – UD120 – E11k – VC1000 ( or AKG 701, 551 ) combination.
I have been reading about Cayin N3, Shanling M3S, Xduoo x10, 20, X10t, iFi Nano iDSD Black, JDSLabs Cmoy…
Can you tell me what do you think I should buy next of these to get better musical reproduction with this equipment that I have. Or should I buy something else ?
If I buy Xduoo X20, will I get much better sound then with UD120 and Fiio E11k? Or Is it better to buy X10t, and use it with UD120 and Fiio 11k…
Or maybe to buy iFi Nano iDSD Black..Im little lost here, so I would like your opinion about this situation.????
Hello there,
I have just found out your website and it’s amazing. I’m sending you this message to seek help and advice.
Yesterday I dropped my Dodocool DA106 that I absolutely loved and now any headphones I plug work only on the right ear. There is no way to exchange it or buy it again. It’s nowhere on Amazon, AliExpress or DHGate. I noticed there is the same product branded IQQ C18 and I have the same problems, it’s everywhere out of stock.
I don’t really know much about this therefore I prefer to have your opinions.
I’m considering buying another High resolution music player and increase my budget a little bit. I could spend around £100, a bit less a bit more. I prefer to go a bit higher only if it’s worth for the quality.
I have a lot of music in FLAC in 24bit/192hz, earphones Revonext QT2, amplifier onkyo a9010.
I usually use the earphones with the player when I’m out and when I’m home I plug the player (from the Line Out) to the amplifier. The quality was really really good. I’m satisfied with that kind of quality. The dodocool has been the only product I have used in my life for high resolution music so I can’t compare it with anything else.
What I’m looking for is something as good as the dodocool in terms of music quality, good battery life and I don’t know if the Line Out is important. I do use it quite a lot when I’m home, I’m wondering if the players with just the jack outpout can offer the same performances when plugged to the Amplifier.
I hope this is enough and I can get some alternatives as I’m suffering a lot without music
Thanks in advance,
Simone
I was looking for tests and reviews about the Dodocool DA1006 when i found your comment .
I ordered one yesterday 23/09/2018 at Ebay https://www.ebay.es/itm/152946972245 for 46 €
Pleased to read ” my Dodocool DA106 that I absolutely loved ”
I can’t wait to get mine !
Considering either the Hiby R3 or the Activo CT10 to play music from my WD MyCloud via wifi and have it transmitted to my in-ceiling speakers via bluetooth. Anyone have any thoughts on these? They both seem to get pretty good reviews, so i’m wondering if anyone has an opinion. I’m not an audiophile, so these are in the range that i want to spend.
Hi ! I’m using the Sony mdr-ex650ap for my phone.
I am looking for something that has more bass , on short – best iem for techno/deep house (great bass + clarity) 100-200$ .
Thanks
I have Shure 846 with Silver Dragon cables and Oppo HA-2SE amp. Have read the reviews, and debating between the A12t, A18t, and Noble Encore. Seems like the A12t will have a similar sound to the 846s, with improvements in detail & soundstage. The A18t also seems awesome, but a bit pricey to me. Appreciate any thoughts from those who’ve listed to these IEMs.
hello i just discover your website and loved it . I have a buying question . I used to have an AK100 amazing sound but stopped using it because no streaming options . I recently bought the activo CT10 but wasn’t that much surprised by the sound . I wondered which player would you recommend that is below 1000 dollars and is open to install app like quobuz tidal and others which let us use the offline mode . Is the Fiio M9 good option ?
Would you mind answering on my email please ? [email protected]
QUESTION: I’ve been wanting to get a DAP for years and often look at the reviews on your site. I finally made the plunge and purchased a FIIO M7 — a beautiful device with nice sound, but because of the way it sorts music, it’s useless to me. I have a large music collection and to get to the music I want I select the Genre, then the Artist, then the Album, then individual tracks. On the M7, when you select Genre, it goes straight to a list of Albums (and there doesn’t seem to be an alternative in the settings). I know that’s better than going straight to a list of individual tracks (like the HiBy OS apparently does) — but it’s still a deal killer for me. I don’t have separate directories for each Genre — I just have the music tagged for Genre.
My old iTunes, my old iPod classic, the SYNC media player in my 10-year old Ford, and my Sonos system all go from Genre to Artist to Album. Is there any DAP on the market that permits you to do the same? Thank you.
I’m using iPhone 8 Plus with RHA MA750i. Looking for the best way to upgrade under $150 (thinking that it’s senseless to get DAC/amp/combo more expensive than the earphones). I like diversity and constantly looking for new music, so Spotify is my best bet. I think I’ve seen that DAPs with good UI for Spotify are way way beyond my budget.
Any suggestions? Appreciate it! Great website, btw.
Hi, I hope I’m not asking a repeat question here 😉
When listening digital music via a DAC, I wonder if the source changes a lot.
I am planning to buy the Chord Hugo2, but I’m wondering if the Fiio X5II I use will affect the quality of the music. I would guess not as it would only send digital to the Hugo anyway.
So: Will a Chord Hugo2 sound much different with a better player if using coax?
Cheers Thierry
It might not be or sound logic but even the digital source changes the sound signature. The best sounding digital input on the H2 for me is the Coax one tbh
Hy headfonia
I Plan to buy a headphone. i like to listen mariah carey song, eric clapton, and rebecca pidgeon.
i have 3 choice, sennheiser momentum, meze 99 classics, phonon smb-02. which one is better for me?, or you have another recomendation headphone with the same price range?
Hi! I’m currently contemplating between either the JOMO audio Quatre or the Lime Ears Aether. Considering that i listen to more pop / pop punk songs and ballads which would you say would have a better performance? Thanks a lot!
I upgraded my headphones for the Sennheiser hd 800s to use with the Cord Hugo 2, my question is, will I benefit even more by adding a Violectric hpa 281 using the hugo2 as Dac only, and would I listen in balanced or un balanced, your thoughts please. Regards. Timothy.
Hi,
I’m currently trying to find a portable friendly pair of headphones to pair with my Astell & Kern AK70 and would like to keep it below $200. I mostly listen to rock and metal music.
I’m quite confused between Meze 99 Neo and Audio Technica ATH-m50x. I also started looking at Sennheiser HD599, but it’s reviews aren’t that compelling.
Can you please advice which would be a better buy or if you have a better suggestion than the ones I’ve mentioned here. I don’t wish to purchase an amp for now so wanted something that could be easily driven. Whew rather long question!
Thank you in advance!
Thanks for the response! I did look at the Beyerdynamic, but ultimately decided to go with the m50x. I felt that I needed the portability and the detachable cables is also a nice to have feature. Hope it t urns out good!
Hi sir I am planning to choose between Empire Ears Legend x, Noble Khan and 64 audio B-STOCK A18t, I use it for daily listening and fun. Could you please let me know what you would pick for the above said purpose
I recently bought the Auris HA 2 largely because of Lievens review. It is very good but I want to change the ecc 82 to the Philips recommended in the review. I have searched the web but have been unable to locate these valves. Any ideas? or alternative valve suggestions to add a little more clarity. I live in UK.
Thanks
Hello, I have been reading some of your reviews regarding CIEMs.
I am new to the concept of CIEMs and my knowledge about my own taste in sound is limited.
As some sort of baseline I have previously owned and liked a lot of shures IEMs, like the 425, 535 and 846. I really like those IEMs but I’m looking for an upgrade into CIEMs.
I watch a lot of movies/tv-shows (mainly action/adventure/science-fiction) on the go as i travel a lot for work but i listen to music a lot as well.
My question is, what would you think would be a good fit for me in the $1000-1500 price range?
Hi
I’m on the verge of buying a Sony NW1A but am unsure of the EU volume cap. I have however found this link below which tells a different story. Am I to believe that the volume can be increased to the same level as it’s USA counterpart. Can anyone advice please.
Thanks https://helpguide.sony.net/dmp/nwwm1/v1/en/contents/TP0001452346.html
I have a pair of akg 450 600 ohm headphones (vintage 1974 or so) which I use with my pioneer sx 950 amp. I am trying to find the size of the jack on these headphone so I can buy a new pair that will work with the amp. Grateful for any info
Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a question about the BGVP DM7 Custom moulds. I am looking at purchasing a pair and have seen that for an additional $60 you can get them custom moulded.
Has anyone had any experience with this? How was the fit, was there good customer support? How was the seal/isolation? Please feel free to add any additional comments.
Just wanted to clarify. For the oBrave Ra C Cu giveaway, I just noticed that comments in incognito is different from when the site is visitied in non-incognito. There are comments missing. Do i need to repost my comment in the regular site?
I read the review of the Obravo Cupids and I was about to buy them until I saw that I’d need an 3.5mm adaptor. Why would a company use something as obscure as a 2.5mm jack? Using an adaptor on relatively expensive (I know) headphones seems like a bad thing.
Hello
Im after some advice if at all possible,
& any help would be greatly appreciated!!
A friend of mine has given me his old Cayin i5
& there is an issue which is causing me
some problems which i just cant sort out.
It is running 1.81 firmware & i want to upgrade
it to either v2.0 or v2.2.
Online it says you have to either update over wifi
or manually by going into recovery mode & scrolling
to the zip file downloaded onto the SD card or into
the root directory of the i5.
So, i have tried the wifi option first, it has connected
up fine using WPS, & then when i click system update
it just searches & searches….i have left it overnight
& nothing, still spinning…. So i have tried the 2nd method,
the update file is in root directory & i just cannot
get into the recovery mode
[down button on right & power button on left (pressed together
ive presumed)…]
it always just wants to power off only, & i have tried it many
many times.
I have also, done a factory reset & then tried all those
methods again over & over.
Is this a common problem? Am i missing something?
It has kind of put me off to be honest, although all
the rest of it i really like. Is there any other method like
a hard reset or suchlike which i can try?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I see you guys have reviewed the Brainwavz B200 (at a price of $199) and I would like to request that you do a refresh of the review as the price is now $89.99 (with a discount right now on their official site to $69.99). My guess is that they dropped the price to be more competitive. It didn’t really make sense to me for a budget friendly company to do a dual BA for $199.
Secondly, I’d like to request if you guys can do a review of the Brainwavz B400? I can understand the B200 not getting in to your best Universal IEMs at $199, but a quad driver at $149 (B400), I’m sure is a contender. I purchased one myself and have been thoroughly impressed and think it’s worth a try (and review) at least!
Hey Matt,
cleaning and maintenance is the alpha and omega.
Clean your IEMs on a daily basis. Take out any debris and earwax from the sound bores either with a cleaning tool (that usually comes supplied as accessory) or get a headphone vac. I’m using one from FiR Audio and it works really well. Just remove anything that shouldn’t be in there and keep the monitors clean.
Also, depending on how often you use your earphones, put them into a dry box. There are many good options for hearing aids. This will keep the internals of the IEMs dry and kill bacteria at the same time.
It goes without saying that you should also take care of them. Don’t drop them. Use transport boxes for safe transportations etc.
That’s pretty much what I do with my C/IEMs and all of mine still work perfectly.
@Lieven, u guys need to be more up-to-date on BT modules, cables, etc. Plus sound is releasing a newer version, sometime…supposedly this month? But you already know what the prices were for the former as reviewed on headfonics: $149 for basic 4 core copper litz, all the way up to ~$800 for more cores + gold plated. that’s a seriously expensive option for BT, costs seem primarily to do with the cable, not BT module…guessing updated will have plebian/cheapo Qualcomm 3xxx series(not higher-end 5xxx series, w/likely better/higher resolution dac/amp) to be BT 5.0 compliant.
Bt4.2 isn’t faster than BT4.1 btw, ur conflating data rates with stereo audio, same for BT5 &BT5.1 Plussound BT cable might make sense for Penta, but for solo, ur spending as much or more than the solo itself, u might as well recommend Hugo2 as a portable dac/amp, check the head-fi -portable hp amps forum.
I’m planning to make an upgrade from my Fiio FH5. My go to genres are progressive metal, rock, metalcore, electronic, and sometimes pop. I don’t care much about the bass, I focus more on an earpiece that can dintinguish instruments. My setup is an iPhone Xs Max with Spotify premium. Maximum budget: 600USD. Sorry to dump everything at once but thank you in advance 🙂
As a studio and live drummer, I’ve been using Shure SE535 w custom moulds for the last few years, that is until one of moulds snapped off a piece of the plastic casing, rendering the monitor useless.
I love having a custom mould for the fit, isolation, bass retention, and comfort over long periods. I’ve heard great things about 64 Audio but would need to pay a pretty penny for the privilege of using them.
I’m not particularly fussy with sound, an audiophile I am not; all I’m looking for is a clear, warm, and balanced sound that gives me plenty of low-end. Something that paints a clear and authentic picture of my drums everytime.
If anyone has some alternatives under 1K, I’m all ears haha!
thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Personally, I’d recommend the Lime Ears Model X. It’s in your price range and sounds superb. Plus you can kick up the bass with a switch, should you want more. 😉
Hope that helps.
dear Headfonia,
I am currently using 64 audio a12t, what iem should I use?
kpop, instrumental
solid, elastic base
great detail, separation
staging: feels like listening in a studio
Any budget is ok!
Hello Headfonia, Good Morning,
I’m looking for a headphone cable that has one 3.5 mm Male to two Female 3.5 mm. that sends just LEFT and RIGHT channels.
All I’ve found are regular Y adapters that takes one stereo signal then splits into two stereo (or mono) signals.
My hope is I can buy this somewhere not build, and would appreciate any info.
Hi Michael,
yeah, it’s either DIY or special request from an aftermarket cable company like Effect Audio, DHC, Norne, Plussound, Eletech etc.
Your best bet would be to contact either one of them and see what they would be quoting for something like that.
Hope that helps.
Hi Michael, I use one from PlusSound myself but all these companies Linus mentions can build you anything you want. Some are more expensive than others but I’m sure you’ll find one within your budget. Tell them Headfonia sent you 😉
Was just wondering if you might be reviewing the Rupert Neve Fidelice DAC!
I was previously waiting for CanJam 2020 in London to check it out but as it was cancelled and I trust your reviews it could help.
Hope your all staying safe.
Currently I am using the onboard DAC of my motherboard: some pretty basic realtec ALC1200 I think, amplified by yamaha A-500. This is a speaker amp, but I hardly ever use speakers. I use the beyerdynamic DT1990 headphones, which I recenly picked up, and this opened up a world of sound for me! Great sound is addictive and I want more.
What would the next best upgrade be for about 300 euros? get a dedicated headphone amp, like the SMSL SP200? or get a better dedicated DAC?
I mainly listen to rock and electronic music, but also sometimes classical and acoustic music.
it depends what your setup plans are. If you just want to do one purchase, it’s best to look at a DAC/AMP combo. If you want to invest more you can first look into a new amp and then a DAC. Check out our recommended buy lists: https://www.headfonia.com/best-gear/
would like to ask you for advice 😉 read few reviews from you and the question is 🙂 – Fh7/DK-3001 pro/DK-4001? any advice here? music listened to – mainly d’n’b, hip-hop, rock…..and another one, which one works best with smartphones pairing? i have also another 2 separate players, just asking to know…thanks
hi, I got from eBay two pairs of custom in ears monitors. the seller couldn’t give me any information about them. could please help me with this pair at least? thank you
I’m looking for an opinion upon a few options I’m looking over regarding a DAP. I’ve been reading some of Matt’s reviews and think I have a handle on what are my 3-choices, but as this would be a new product for me, I’m looking for a little push or nudge in what would be the best direction…. from those who would know better than I.
Specifically I’m torn between the A&K SR25, the Cowon Plenue R2, and a latest generation iPod Touch, but with adding an Audioquest Dragonfly Red or Cobalt. My personal collection of music is ALAC on an iMac dedicated as a music server. I’m principally looking to bring music to work, but because of my work I should be able to enjoy the higher fidelity offered by these set-ups.
Clearly the iPod Touch would keep me in my preferred ecosystem, but moving to a different brand for DAP isn’t an issue.
I would principally be listening with Beyerdynamic T51 cans.
As all of these options are fairly close in price-point, that’s not a concern.
Any opinion is welcome, or direction to some resource beyond Headfonia.
I am a Keyboard Player (Digital Piano, synths, drum and bass virtual instruments etc) and spend most of my playing time monitoring through headphones (I’m not a virtuoso and get lots of door slamming noises emanating from all over the house if I play with the monitor speakers on). I generally play Pop, Rock, Country, Reggae and a little Jazz but hardly any Classical pieces.
My current cans are a set of Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro’s which are connected to the Headphone output of my Mackie 1202 VLZ4 mixer which in turn is connected to A Digital Stage Piano, Synth, Sound module and Laptop with various (Hundreds) of Virtual Instruments. I record into Cubase and Ableton occaisionally but mostly play live to either pre-recorded tracks or my own produced tracks. I find the Beyers sound reasonable but not exciting, very comfortable at first but my ears start burning after about an hour and I feel they may be a little heavy. I don’t think I am getting the full sound experience from my instruments so would appreciate some advice. I am not listening to pre-recorded music via Hi-Fi system for long periods although if my phones covered this too that would be a bonus.
I have done some research which has left me no closer than a choice from 3 different headsets and complicated by not being able to test them long enough before buying.
My shortlist includes:
Sennheiser HD600/HD650 (seems like the preference in the Pro Musicians arena are still the HD600)
Shure SRH1840 (a little expensive for me but what’s money for?)
These are within my limited budget.
I would greatly appreciate your answers or comments on my questions as follows:
1. Would I improve the sound of my existing cans by using a dedicated amp or even a Hi-fi amp? (I have a Cambridge Audio Azur 540R or an older Technics D Class amp that I could use if either were a step up from the mixer on it’s own).
2. Would a different set of phones from my list improve the sound and comfort to any extent.
3. If you think I would benefit from a new set of Headphones, would I benefit even more by using a dedicated amp as in 1 above?
4. If you feel I need a dedicated headphone amp, in either case, what would you recommend? (Please be gentle with me on price) I have no experience or knowledge of these devices.
If you got this far, thank you for your patience, I really would appreciate some advice.
Hi, i’m planning to buy my first DAP that have bidirectional bluetooth but torn between m2x and HiBy R3 Pro Saber.
I just recently owned, Lypertek TEVI, Shozy Form 1.1 and FiiO BTR5. And wondering if one of the DAP above will upgrade my sound quality since all I’ve been streaming from spotify from my phone.
Could anyone help to compare their sound signature and quality? Since R3 pro saber hasn’t been review in here and I read many good review from it
Hello, I’m wondering if you might be able to give me some advice on choose an in-ear monitor. I am a professional drummer, and this would be used exclusively for live music performance monitoring as a replacement for a stage wedge monitor. As such, it’s vitally important that the IEMs have a really good seal and stays put even with a lot of movement (cord over ear). I need good sound isolation, and a clear balanced sound. Finally, durable and comfortable for hours on stage. BUT I’m on a tight budget. I know the Shure SE215s are the default “budget IEM,” but it’s only one driver, and I’ve been drawing heavily from the Crinacle ranking list (https://crinacle.com/rankings/iems) and the Antdroid ranking list (https://www.audiodiscourse.com/p/antdroid-iem-ranking-list.html) as I do my research , and they both sites rank the SE215 quite low.
Here are the three models I’m considering:
THEIAUDIO Legacy 3
Shozy Form 1.1
Tin HiFi T3
The Legacy 3 looks like it might have the best isolation, but it’s disappointing that it only comes with one type of tip and I worry about getting a good fit. The Form 1.1 is a similar build and had a whole slew of tip options. At first glance, I wouldn’t expect the T3 to isolate very well, but rtings.com says it does, though I’ve also found some reviews saying it doesn’t. (unfortunately rtings doesn’t have a review of the Legacy 3 or Form 1.1). I also have concerns with the T3 staying in place.
I have been trying to research but it’s very hard to tell which are “In-Ear Monitors” just for personal listening, and which work for musicians to use on stage. (I feel like we really need separate names for the two categories).
Can you help guide me here? Of those three, which would you recommend and why? Or what other models might you recommend? I would at least consider something up to $200 if it checks all the boxes, but am really looking for around $100 price.
Your review of the Shuoer Tape persuaded me to pick one up and ignore the “it’s unlistenably shrill” refrain. I’m glad I did, it’s still my favorite IEM. Do you have any plans to listen to the Tape Pro?
Hi! I have sennheiser hd 660 s + ifi neo. I want upgrade to sennheiser hd 800 s + topping a90 + d90se. Using mostly for tidal, youtube and gaming. So i have a couple of questions:
1. Do I need topping d90se dac for topping a90 amp or topping a90 amp is good enough for ifi neo using as a dac?
2. Is Ifi Neo good enough as dac / amp combo for hd 800 s to use this cans to full potential and save some money?
3. If I buy topping stack do I have some benefits of using XLR balanced vs rca’s cables (input and output cables) in terms of sound quality differences ?
I have yamaha hs8 pair with hs8s subs, Currently i use audio engine d1 for dac and have plans to replace the dac with the one that have bluetooth capability. Which one is better for bluetooth DAC, Topping DX3 Pro+ or Fiio BTA 30 Pro? Or do you have other recomendation with price tag below 400
I’ve been enjoying my DT770 Pro LE 32 Ohms for the last 10 years, but I’ve decided it’s time to spend a little more cash on something better, but with a similiar sound signature/balance. I don’t want to spend any more than £600.
I listen mainly to Rock, and 80’s pop but have a fairly wide ranging and eclectic taste. For example Pink Floyd, Nightwish, Rammstein, Depeche Mode, Floor Jansen, Delinquent Habits e.t.c.
Can anybody recommend some headphones to look at?
From listening to a few reviews I have been thinking about DT1990, DT1770 and Amiron Home.
Question, has Fiio dropped out of the lower end ($$) of the DAP market? They used to offer players form $50.00 and up. They had some really decent DAPs for $100.00 to $150.00. Their current players now start at $499.00 and go up (substantially) from there. Please tell me thay haven’y abandoned the affordable DAP market.
I want to connect my A&K SR25 to the dual XLR balanced input on my Edifier S300Pro speakers. The SR25 manual shows that the 2.5mm connection is used for signal, and the ground is provided from the 3.5mm output.
I cannot find this cable anywhere for sale. Does anyone know where I can buy this ?
I called my A&K dealer in the USA and they were unable to help.
Thanks in anticipation,
John.

Hi Headfonia,
I have been avid reader of your writings and it always been an insightful and entertaining readings I must say, congrats and may success continues with you.
In this occasion, kindly shed me a light the comparison between 64 audio Nio and Tia Trio

to get the true potential of bit perfect output ifi usb dacs we have to use bit perfect sources right..
dale thorn

Hi,
Kindly, could you give me an answer?
Thanks
Paolo Zucchetto
dale thorn
To be honest sir, you don’t need an answer per se, you need a professional consultation that takes time and might cost some money.
Here’s one money-saving idea for you: Ask one question at a time and wait for the answer. That way, someone may be able to answer.
Paolo Zucchetto
ok. VORZÜGE DUOII is better than ALO CDM?
Grazie
Lieven
It’s different.
Paolo Zucchetto
Last question, Sony NW-WZ A1 is better than AK 300?

It’s different 😉

Of both questions can you tell me at least which devices has a warm sound, mor bass. Grazie

Thanks!
Lieven
how about an earbud?
Omer
I did notice the sudden comeback of these little bastards, but I’m kind of afraid by the fit of those (although, as most people i guess, the last earbuds i wore were from dumbphone crappy kind).
Any suggestions though?
dale thorn
For earbuds, the Monk Plus. No contest. For a more normal bass, Apple’s Earpods or Airpods.

Thanks

Hello Headfonia, Greetings…!
Hope you are well…! Your reviews are really awesome. I would like to get few of my doubts clarified from you. I’m planning to buy Beyerdynamic Amiron Home or HD650. I’m already have Chord Mojo. Do we need additional amplifier to drive these headphone along with chord mojo? Or mojo will be fair enough to handle this headphones…if we need additional amplifier please suggest few…
dale thorn
For most music you should be OK, but if some of your music does not seem to have the proper bass impact, then more power may be needed. Especially with the HD650.

Between the SHURE 846se and the Noble Audio Encore what do you advise me?
The Encore at good bass?

Hello,
In Mike’s informative item on OSX Audio players from 2012 which I have just read, the top three for SQ appear to be Sonic Studio followed by Audirvana and Pure Music.
Is this still your recommendation?
(I play local files and Spotify Premium through a Macbook Pro with HRT Microstreamer.)
Thanks in advance,
Nick M Jones
dale thorn
Audirvana Plus is the one I see that’s recommended most, and as for other software, a lot has changed in 6 years. Audirvana looks like a one-time fee from what I see, whereas other music players require constant repayment every month or year.
Audirvana requires an Internet connection, so that means they want to register your actual computer. It might be difficult when changing computers to transfer the ‘license’ to another computer. It also has implications for DRM for purchased files, but that would not apply to streaming.
Ulco Wesselink
For Nick

[email protected] i wonder if anyone with pxc 450 by sennheiser has ever experienced the headphones actually amplifying ambient noise rather than canceling it? does this occur when they get old? what can i do?
dale thorn
Can you check the microphone inputs and see if they are clean and free of dirt? When the noise increases, the NC circuit might be compensating for something. Cords can cause problems too.
Hans
Hi Lieven, do you know how the Hiby R3 and the Onkyo DP-S1 and Cowon Plenue D compare?
I prefer a balanced sound that is versatile to cover genres like classical orchestra, jazz, to rock and pop so detail retrieval and extension are important. Warm or cold doesn’t matter although between both I prefer a warmer sound.
I noticed they were all reviewed at some point so hope you can help 🙂
Lieven
That’s tough as it are all other reviewers, sorry man.
Hans
Hi, another reviewer found that the R3:
“”R3 sounds comparable to Fiio X7II: which means balanced sound just a bit less stage (width maybe) than X7II”
“R6 is slightly bassier than R3 and better 3D”
Is this similar to what you found, as I think you mentioned the R3 is a bit warmer and forward.
Thanks!
Lieven
First of all you need to know what AM module the X7II had, only then could one compare. But in general I wouldn’t say the 7ii and R3 are alike, au contraire.
Hans
Thanks Lieven. Looks like the Headfonia review of the DP-S1 is more promising at least for sound then?
Hans
Hi Lieven, you mentioned that R3 is similar in sound to X5iii – could you elaborate a little? Also, Marcus mentioned he found the R3 to be without the treble glare that some older SABRE 9018 DAPs (R3 is 9028) used to have. Did you pick this up too when listening?
Lieven
warmer, slower, thicker. that’s it really. but the X5iii is more noisy.
I’m not really one to complain about the Sabre treble, me likes 🙂
Hans
Thanks for sharing!!

Hi,
I would like to know what you guys would recommend more.
Thank you.

* Better fit
Thanks!
Zox
Hello,
I have the following equipment:
Headphones : AKG 551 , AKG701
IEM: Vsonic VC1000
Amplifier : Fiio E11k
DAC : UD120,
I will also buy Sennheiser HD650 because its very high on your recommendation list.
Thank you
Lieven
iDsd, xDSD, Mojo, C5D, etc. that’s the way to go with your phone.

Thanks in advance,
Simone
Lieven
I’d recommend an entry level DAP with a line-out. There are many good ones out there

Thank you.
J
Hi there,
I’m using iPhone 8 Plus with RHA MA750i.

Lieven
It might not be or sound logic but even the digital source changes the sound signature. The best sounding digital input on the H2 for me is the Coax one tbh

I upgraded my headphones for the Sennheiser hd 800s to use with the Cord Hugo 2, my question is, will I benefit even more by adding a Violectric hpa 281 using the hugo2 as Dac only, and would I listen in balanced or un balanced, your thoughts please. Regards. Timothy.

The H2 already is a nice setup but to me the V281 in balanced output with H2 as DAC is better (I use that too)

Hi,
I’m currently trying to find a portable friendly pair of headphones to pair with my Astell & Kern AK70 and would like to keep it below $200.
Lieven
For Rock and metal I’d choose the M50 of the ones you listed, but I’d most of all would look into the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO 32….
Madhur Verma
Thanks for the response! I did look at the Beyerdynamic, but ultimately decided to go with the m50x. I felt that I needed the portability and the detachable cables is also a nice to have feature. Hope it t urns out good!

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a question about the BGVP DM7 Custom moulds. I am looking at purchasing a pair and have seen that for an additional $60 you can get them custom moulded.
Has anyone had any experience with this? How was the fit, was there good customer support? How was the seal/isolation? Please feel free to add any additional comments.
Thanks for your time and help.

Hi,
I’m orientating about new in-ears. Could you please give me an top 3 in ears with the following specifications?
• Wide soundstage (very important)

Just wanted to clarify. For the oBrave Ra C Cu giveaway, I just noticed that comments in incognito is different from when the site is visitied in non-incognito. There are comments missing. Do i need to repost my comment in the regular site?

Never mind, i guess the caching of google chrome kicked in and did not sync when viewed in non-incognito. i apologize.

Thanks for any help.
All the best

Matt
What do you recommend I do (or don’t do) for earphone care? It always seems like I wind up losing sound in one ear within a year’s use.
Linus
Hey Matt,
cleaning and maintenance is the alpha and omega.
Hope that helped.

Hello, will you be kind enough to suggest a MMCX bluetooth cable around 100 USD to covert IEMs wireless. I am planning to buy MEZE AUDIO RAI SOLO…
Lieven
Hi. I’m not sure about the price, but I’d recommend PlusSound
ma g
Lieven
I said I wasn’t sure about the price, it’s just the first brand I would look at. No need to go in attack mode ????
I absolutely hate BT myself.
Jim
Hi!
Chris
Hey audio lovers!
Thanks so much legends,
Chris
Linus
Hi Chris,
thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Personally, I’d recommend the Lime Ears Model X. It’s in your price range and sounds superb. Plus you can kick up the bass with a switch, should you want more. 😉
Hope that helps.
Cheers!
Jimmy
dear Headfonia,
I am currently using 64 audio a12t, what iem should I use?
kpop, instrumental
solid, elastic base
great detail, separation
staging: feels like listening in a studio
Any budget is ok!

Hi
Is the Oppo HA 2 SW a good amplifier for the Audeze LCD 1?
Lieven
I haven’t tried that exact combo, but the LCD-1 is easy to drive. Just don’t choose a warm and thick amp to pair with it.
Michael
Hello Headfonia, Good Morning,
I’m looking for a headphone cable that has one 3.5 mm Male to two Female 3.5 mm. that sends just LEFT and RIGHT channels.
All I’ve found are regular Y adapters that takes one stereo signal then splits into two stereo (or mono) signals.
My hope is I can buy this somewhere not build, and would appreciate any info.
Michael
RE: My question above… would you pretty much say it’s a DIY ?
Linus
Hi Michael,
yeah, it’s either DIY or special request from an aftermarket cable company like Effect Audio, DHC, Norne, Plussound, Eletech etc.
Your best bet would be to contact either one of them and see what they would be quoting for something like that.
Hope that helps.
Michael
Thanks, I’ll go to their websites.
Lieven
Hi Michael, I use one from PlusSound myself but all these companies Linus mentions can build you anything you want. Some are more expensive than others but I’m sure you’ll find one within your budget. Tell them Headfonia sent you 😉
Tom
Hi there guys,
Was just wondering if you might be reviewing the Rupert Neve Fidelice DAC!
I was previously waiting for CanJam 2020 in London to check it out but as it was cancelled and I trust your reviews it could help.
Hope your all staying safe.
Gregory SEGAUD
Hi, a simple question…soundcard or DAC for PC listening with a Grado ??? thx
Lieven
Always a DAC and AMP 🙂
Gregory SEGAUD
Oh, thanks for answer..any suggestions, cause i have already the fiio q1 ^^
Lieven
it depends on your budget and how you will use it
Greg
Maybe a 100-300 € budget in home use (pc)..got a Grado SR80e and a Simgot EN700Pro
Seyley
What digital file format do people listen to which provides the best ‘ detailed response’?

FLAC
Martijn
Hi Lieven and others!,
Currently I am using the onboard DAC of my motherboard: some pretty basic realtec ALC1200 I think, amplified by yamaha A-500.
Thank you for your advice,
Greetings from Venlo, Netherlands
Lieven
Hoi Martijn
it depends what your setup plans are. If you just want to do one purchase, it’s best to look at a DAC/AMP combo. If you want to invest more you can first look into a new amp and then a DAC. Check out our recommended buy lists: https://www.headfonia.com/best-gear/
Peter
would like to ask you for advice 😉 read few reviews from you and the question is 🙂 – Fh7/DK-3001 pro/DK-4001? any advice here? music listened to – mainly d’n’b, hip-hop, rock…..and another one, which one works best with smartphones pairing? i have also another 2 separate players, just asking to know…thanks

Thank you.
Martin Still
I am a Keyboard Player (Digital Piano, synths, drum and bass virtual instruments etc) and spend most of my playing time monitoring through headphones (I’m not a virtuoso and get lots of door slamming noises emanating from all over the house if I play with the monitor speakers on).
Martin Still
Apologies but I have to add a question to my previous post:
5. Should I consider IEM’s or are they not as good as Headphones?

Thank you!
Steve

Your review of the Shuoer Tape persuaded me to pick one up and ignore the “it’s unlistenably shrill” refrain. I’m glad I did, it’s still my favorite IEM. Do you have any plans to listen to the Tape Pro?

Hi,
I broke the hair-like wire in the Sennheiser HD 580 driver.
Is there a way to repair that?

Nicosius Geraldi
I have yamaha hs8 pair with hs8s subs, Currently i use audio engine d1 for dac and have plans to replace the dac with the one that have bluetooth capability. Which one is better for bluetooth DAC, Topping DX3 Pro+ or Fiio BTA 30 Pro? Or do you have other recomendation with price tag below 400
Paul
Lieven
Go for Beyer, not the Amiron unless you want warmth, smoothness and a slower pace (but fun!)

Hi,
I want to connect my A&K SR25 to the dual XLR balanced input on my Edifier S300Pro speakers. The SR25 manual shows that the 2.5mm connection is used for signal, and the ground is provided from the 3.5mm output.
I cannot find this cable anywhere for sale. Does anyone know where I can buy this ?
I called my A&K dealer in the USA and they were unable to help.
Thanks in anticipation,
John.
