Radiant Acoustics
While Radiant Acoustics is likely not to ring a bell to most of our audience, I am sure that the names PURIFI, Nordic Hi-Fi and Peter Lyngdorf’s HiFi Klubben will. In 2022 Radiant Acoustics was born out of the collective drive of these three, who wanted to create a compact no-compromise bookshelf speaker that doesn’t break the bank.
Peter Lyngdorf is one of hi-fi’s biggest legends. Having formed HiFi Klubben and DALI early in his carrier, he also is the co-founder of PURIFI. PURIFI is the creator of very special and well-thought-out speaker drivers that don’t follow norms. Which you will see on their website, where they go in depth about their functionalities and advantages over regular drivers.
Their self-claimed mission is to provide the best hi-fi products at reasonable prices to music and audio lovers all around the world, thus reshaping the hi-fi world.
To realize Radiant Acoustics’ ambitious goals, they knew that cutting corners would not be an option. Only the best materials would be allowed in their speakers. From the components inside, to the housing and the drivers, everything has to meet their high standards. Peter Lyngdorf himself oversaw each detail from the cabinet, the crossover and the used drivers.
Radiant Acoustics is ultimately driven by the know-how and industry leading technologies from all their partners. PURIFI delivers their advanced drivers, HiFi Klubben the technological and retail knowledge while Nordic Hi-Fi brings their direct-to-consumer approach, ensuring ultimate value.
In today’s feature we will look at how the final result turned out and what consumers can expect from the Clarity 6.2 loudspeakers.
Clarity 6.2
The Radiant Acoustics Clarity 6.2 is Radiants’ debut loudspeaker. The goal was to offer a high-performance compact bookshelf speaker that’s still affordable to the wide audience. When looking at the product page of Clarity 6.2 you will notice that there is much more to them than meets the eye at first glance.
Every detail has been thought out and optimized carefully. From the cabinet, which was apparently designed in Peter Lyngdorf’s personal woodworking shop, to the inner damping materials to the AMT tweeter and the crossover.
Clarity 6.2 uses a two-way design with a 6.5” PURIFI mid/bass driver and a custom-made AMT tweeter. DALI, another company by Peter Lyngdorf, produces these AMT drivers for Radiant Acoustics. The iron free crossover divides the frequencies at 2,400 Hz.
Radiant Acoustics went for a passive radiator design over a conventional bass-reflex port for the Clarity 6.2. We can find two 6.5” PURIFI radiators on each side of the cabinet. While this is a more costly approach, it delivers more precise results in the low-end extension and is easier to work with than tuning a port. At times I placed my ears next to the passive radiators to hear them up close, and I was astonished by the precision and quality they provide to the sound. The passive radiators are set up in a push/pull configuration.
The Clarity 6.2 has a rated nominal impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity of 85dB (@2.83V RMS ~1W 8 ohms). This means they require a more powerful amplifier than your usual bookshelves. Radiant Acoustics also recommends amplifiers with a minimum of 100 Watts for the Clarity 6.2. I can only support that sentiment, since my 50W Chord Electronics Alto didn’t do them justice. The Clarity 6.2 also needs a few extra clicks on my Serene KTE to get to my preferred volume level of 65-70 decibels.
The cabinet is made out of high density MDF and uses Basotect material for internal damping. This is quite a special material and not often used in high end audio to my knowledge. This open cell foam is made from melamine resin and offers excellent damping factors for the AMT tweeter’s backward sound.
Special research and development went into the AMT tweeter and the supporting waveguide. The drivers themselves are made by DALI feature an ultra-thin folded diaphragm with a large surface area. It also boasts a four times higher efficiency compared to other AMT tweeters, resulting in a more powerful and clearer top end. Unlike common AMT tweeters, this one features a dual magnet configuration, which enhances its magnetic field.
The aluminum front baffle has been designed with a supporting waveguide for the tweeter. However, it provides a dual purpose to the AMT driver. Not only does it shape its frequency response to seamlessly integrate with the crossover frequency, but it also provides special dispersion of the treble to broaden the sweet spot of the speakers.
If you want to gain more in depth knowledge about the Clarity 6.2 I strongly suggest reading their deep dive page and PDF file. It is mind-blowing how much detail went into designing them!
The entire speaker is designed to minimize or eliminate distortion at all costs necessary.
The Clarity 6.2 is only available through Radiant Acoustics’ web-shop and comes with a 30-day return policy as well as a ten-year warranty. Yes, that’s ten years full support. Clarity 6.2 is available in matte black, white or walnut. One pair will set you back 3,998€, in this all costs are covered though. There are no extra charges for shipping or importing.
Optionally available is the Clarity stands, which are made specifically for the Clarity 6.2, but of course can also be used with any other speaker that fits the base. This one is available for 798€ per pair. Custom tailored stands provide extra stability for the speakers, which is why I recommend getting them.
