Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless – Review

Specifications

In opposition to the Sennheiser HD660S or the HD800S, Sennheiser isn’t too talkative regarding the Momentum 4 specifications. No indication regarding the driver apart from its size (42mm), no information about the embedded CPU, and just a laconic “Sennheiser Signature Sound”. Still, if you dig in, you’ll find some interesting features.

First, the new Sennheiser ditched AptX-LL for AptX adaptive, thanks to the new 5.2 Bluetooth chip, which should give enhanced performances, with a compatible source. Battery life has more than tripled, with a battery rated at just 700mah, and charging times are even faster (5 minutes for 4 hours of listening)

Second, the new model doesn’t reach the same level attained as its older sibling. While the Momentum 3 could reach 118dB SPL, the new model only goes up to 106dB SPL – a surprisingly low number. Thankfully, distortion level are equally low and on a daily basis, this should not make too much of a difference… or I hope so.

Finally, the brands announced that phone calls are now clearer, thanks to various updates and a new set of Beamforming microphones – and in my opinion, it’s a real improvement, at least during my calls.

Additional accessories

There is just one thing you can do to improve your experience with the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless: an APT-X source. The device is agnostic, but you’d preferably use an iPhone or an Android phone, so you can install the Smart Control app.

Sure, you can plug your own DAP by the wired connection, as Sennheiser still offers this option for those who prefer the good old cable solution.

Sensitivity / Hiss

The Momentum 4 Wireless isn’t hard to drive: the amplifier and DSD are directly built-in, so all you have to do is connect your phone, and click play. There is no hiss whatsoever, whether you use “transparency mode”, “noise-cancelling” or even “pure” mode.

Battery life

Good news! Sennheiser claims 60h of continuous listening on a single charge, with ANC on, a massive number on paper. And, if during my review, I was closer to the 40h, this is still quite impressive and I doubt anyone would ever need more playtime unless you don’t want to charge your headphone more than once a month.

The charge was fast too and if I had some battery drain issue the first time, a software update fixed that quite easily and I was pleasantly surprised by the Momentum time and time.

The review is true. The sound is amazing. I have tested Momentum 4 side by side with 1000XM5. The sound diference was so big that I’ve sent 1000XM5 right back.
It seems like the ANC and app issues solved after the update.

This might be the only negative review I’ve seen on this headphone.

I am a big fan of the Momentum 3 wireless, the sound quality is fantastic for a Bluetooth headphone, especially when you use the high end setting in the app.

The noise canceling on that headphone is not the greatest, but I’m very happy with the sound.
