Review: Shozy BG – Striking

Shozy BG

Technical Performance

The Shozy BG performs excellent for the price when it comes to technical success. The sound stage is pretty much like a large room with the band in the middle. There’s plenty of space and the IEM has perfect separation for this price level. The stage width is particularly impressive to me. The depth on the other hand is quite nice as well.

Tonality is not the best factor of the BG, even though it’s very nice. I would’ve liked a bigger note size and warmth across the mid but that’s personal. The good thing however is that, the BG has excellent imaging qualities with its dark background and great separation. When you add the transparency and resolving, clean nature to the mix, then you have a great IEM for the price.

Dynamics are not incredible with the BG and that’s one of the few negatives that I can bring up. The required energy here is lacking because of the relaxed sound of the IEM. Especially the treble section affects the dynamics in a negative way.

Comparisons

vs. Kinera Idun: The Idun is a great product from Kinera and it puts up a stiff fight with the BG in terms of frequency performance. But since the Idun has a dynamic driver for bass, it reaches much deeper and has more rumble down low. The BG holds its ground with a reference and quality type of bass. But for pure bass performance and slam, it’s the Idun.

The mids are close in terms of presentation but the BG edges out with its clarity and transparency. Treble-wise they’re both not incredible I would again go with the BG because of its micro detail delivery, articulation and clarity.

Technical performance wise the BG has a little wider stage and better resolution. This would come down to your choices. Genres would play a big role when choosing between the two. If you like Pop, Dub Step or EDM etc., the Idun should be better. If you like Classical, Jazz and other genres which wouldn’t require too much bass slam, you will like the BG.

They also both fit and isolate very well, but I think the BG is a little more ergonomic in that regard.

vs. FiiO FA7: My next review will most likely be about the FA7. It contains lots of warmth and body when compared to the BG. The mids are closer, the vocals are more intimate, the instruments are fuller. The overall sound of the FA7 is much more fleshy compared to the separated and relaxed BG. The treble is better to my ears with the FA7, and I think it has better tonality.

vs: iBasso IT04: The iBasso’s successful IT04 gives a better and fuller bass response together with more accentuated mids. Treble is a little more extending as well. Resolution level is close, but the IT04 has a slight edge in terms of separation. The BG has a little wider sound stage with similar depth. The IT04 has a better overall balance and it overall gets ahead of the BG. But for the BG’s credit; it puts up a fight even though it costs less.

Conclusion

The Shozy BG goes straight to our Best Universal IEMs list! With its great resolution, transparency, sound stage, imaging qualities and clarity, it certainly deserves it. If Shozy continues to give these kind of products which exceed the price range compared to the market, then they’ll be even more successful.

The BG is simply one of the best monitors for under $ 300 at this point. Great build quality, tremendous fit, a very nice cable, and most importantly a very nice sound that would make a lot of listeners happy. I doubt there’s more you can ask.
