Review : Simgot EM3 – The Other Guy

Design & Build Quality

Shell

The Simgot EM3 are available in three colors : red, black and blue. If you choose the red or blue version, you’ll get a two-toned IEM as the left ear will always remain black. A swift move from the brand if you ask me, making the EM3 more distinctive and easier to identify. Unless you chose black for both ears, but that’s cunning.

The translucent shells are made of plastic and not acrylic, it’s a very different feeling when you pick them. From afar the design is astounding, the metallic faceplate blends nicely with the outer shell and gives this futuristic feeling. In the hand, it’s a bit deceptive as the plastic shell cannot compete with metallic/acrylic in term of “perceived quality”.

Build quality

Build quality is good even if this “plastic sensation” never leaves you. The EM3 is lightweight and to be fair, every part of the IEM feels fantastic, none the shell.

The 2-pin socket is sleeved into the protection slot of the cable, to prevent the pins to fold out. It’s a simple but great idea, even if MMCX sockets tend to become the norm. Plug/unplug needs a little force, a sign of great craftsmanship if you ask me, and you will never lose them on the run.

The cable is braided, so it feels and looks very nice. The version I received was coated in black so you would not expect them to be a mix of OCC and SPC threads. A peculiar thing on the Simgot EM3 is how they covered every metallic part in rubber, from the plug to the splitter. You can either find it weird or clever, I’m still perplex but you know this cable won’t age badly.

One more thing, if the shell is made of plastic, the nozzle is made of gold-plated brass. Like the Hidizs NF-3U. It’s a big step-up from plastic/acrylic tubes in my opinion, the tips don’t fall off as often and I get a tighter grip in the ear. Good call there, Simgot.

Bundle and Comfort

Inside the box

The packaging of the Simgot EM3 is the same as for the EN700 Bass/Pro. If not fancy and it’s still very nice if you’re into boxes and such, I especially like the metallic insert on the bottom part of the box. Inside, you find :

  • the Simgot EM3
  • six pairs of penetrating silicon tips + six pairs of balanced silicon tips
  • a 0.78mm 2-pin 6N OCC + SPC braided cable
  • an leatherette case to carry your IEM, a very nice one even more !

The bundle is simple and if you don’t get a cleaning kit, this won’t be needed on the EM3 in my opinion. What’s lacking here might be a balanced cable, so you should get an after-market one.

Additional accessories

Simgot doesn’t offer after market cables, if you want to get a specific one you should check out other brands like Forza or Effect Audio. That’s a bit sad since the brand offers various types of cable, depending of which model you chose :

  • EN700 : 6N / 8 cores single-crystal copper and silver plated braided wires
  • EM1/MT3 : 6N / 4 cores high purity OFC braided wires
  • EM2 : 4 Cores silver plated coppper braided wires
  • EM3/EM5 : 6N / 4 cores OCC+SPC braided wires
  • EM5 : same but without the adapter

In addition to all those cables, Simgot also provides a wireless adapter : the APT0. This could come handy if you want to use your IEMs for sports activities.

Comfort

Fit is pretty good on the EM3, the shape combined with the lightweight structure make them easy to wear. As I said before, the nozzle is made of gold-plated brass and that ensures a very tight fit for the tips. I never ever lost one of them during my commute, and that is very rare.

The cable is light and doesn’t tangle, which is cool if you like to put your IEMs directly in your pocket. If you use the carry case, this is irrelevant.

Isolation

Sadly, the Simgot EM3 falls a little short in this category, the plastic is a bit too thin to block the external sounds out. Once the music is playing at moderate levels, you won’t hear the noises anymore. Yet, if you intend to use these IEM passively, at a concert for example (some do!), the isolation will be too weak to be really effective.
