Review : Simgot EM3 – The Other Guy

Sensitivity / Hiss

The Simgot EM3 is harder to drive than you would expect. On my iPhone, the amplification was not sufficient by any means : weak bass, tight sound stage and thin vocals. Once properly driven, things were much more potent and you should always use a DAP or an amplifier.

The EM3 isn’t prone to hiss, even driven by the iBasso DX120 I had no issues.

Association

  • Simgot EM3 + FiiO M6 : a good lightweight combo, a bit too shy due to limited power output. The Sabre DAC gives plenty of dynamics but the combo didn’t sound amazing, just good.
  • Simgot EM3 + FiiO M9 : a much better combo, AKM DAC and hybrid was a great combination and the EM3 sounded more alive, more precise. Synergy is superb and if you can, you should try those with a TRRS cable.
  • Simgot EM3 + iBasso DX150 : technically, it’s the best combo, again. I know I always praise the DX150 but I still thinks it’s one of the best choices in this price range. Bass is tighter, highs more precise and even though the mids still sounds recessed, the overall performance sounds pretty damn good.

Comparisons

For those who want it, here is the comparison section :

  • BGVP DMG : the EM3 has the same isolation issue, so once you’re in a loud environment, it’s hard to tell those two apart. Nonetheless, I think I prefer the DMG in term of resolution and the EM3 in term of signature..
  • FiiO FH5 : the FH5 is nicer and sturdier, but the EM3 is easier to wear. In term of sound, the FH5 is easier to drive, making it better in most situations, but once the EM3 is properly driven, this is a different fight. Yet, I’d stick for the FiiO FH5…
  • FiiO F9Pro : the F9 Pro and EM3 sound very much alike. Yet, the EM3 is cleaner in my opinion, thanks to better highs and faster transients. You should test both before making a decision, trust me on this.

Conclusion

The Simgot EM3 are good IEMs with a lot of good points : impressive design, great dynamic driver, perfect cable. Sound wise, there is good and bad. Bass is impressive to say the least, with fast transients and deep lows that never overwhelmed me. Highs are on the soft side but never trade technicality for harshness, and that deserves credit.

The real issue comes from the vocals which are too recessed for my taste. It works on classical music and electro but once you switch to Jazz this is a bigger problem. It polishes every good aspect caveats from the EN700 Bass but at the same time it doesn’t really sound much better.

So in the end, while the EM3 still is very good, we at the moment still prefer the some of the other Simgot models (think EN700). That however might be different for you, so listen to it yourself, compare both and make up your mind.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. Even after more than 10 years of experience, Nanotechnos still collects all gear he gets, even his first MPMAN MP3 player. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing(ly boring) numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.
