AAW Canary

We continue our $50k gear giveaway with another stunning IEM, this time it’s the Canary by AAW! Just keep reading and enter the giveaway!

Last week’s Winners

The UE Reference Remastered giveaway is now over! The lucky guy this week is Simon Slavik from Slovakia. You will be contacted very shortly by email (check your spam folder), so make sure to get in touch.

Number 45

As promised and explained earlier, we’ll be doing a year long of weekly giveaways and last September was the start of our 52-week celebration. For this 45th round of the biggest audio giveaway the world has ever seen, we’re giving away a universal set of the AAW Canary IEM!! The IEM is worth $2.200USD! This incredible IEM can become yours and all you have to do is … sign up and leave a comment what got you in to good portable audio.

But first, let’s look at AAW and the Canary IEM you can win.

AAW Canary

AAW Canary

About AAW

Advanced AcousticWerkes is a Singaporean brand of custom and universal In Ear Monitors. They have been around for a little while already. Their W900 hybrid monitor has been very popular especially.

Key products of theirs are the A2H – which was one of the first hybrid CIEMs, the W500, the W900 as well as Nightingale and Canary.

Their line-up consists of many hybrid designs and AAW has been pushing them a lot since their launch. Earlier this year, AAW has introduced their first ever triple hybrid model – the Canary. And that’s the unit we’re giving away today, so let’s check it out.

The Canary

Full product page of the Canary can be found here: https://www.aaw.me/products/canary-isobaric-electrostatic-universal-in-ear-monitor

AAW Canary

AAW Canary

It’s Linus who reviewed it for us, and this was his conclusion:

AAW brings a more than complete package with this CIEM. The accessories are spectacular, the build quality very good and the sound just wonderful.

The Canary does make a lot of things right, maybe it doesn’t lead the hoard in any particular segment, but it presents an excellent tuning balance and for me is one of the top CIEMs in my collection. Canary doesn’t seem to step a foot wrong, but rather plays it safe. It doesn’t risk anything to go beyond it’s abilities, which makes it a nicely enjoyable ride.

If that sounds like your kind of signature, give the Canary a listen and see if one of your local retailers has them available for demo. For me Canary is an easy recommendation and gets placed in our Best CIEM list.

You can find his full review here:

Winner

The lucky winner will get his/her unit shipped directly by AAW. AAW will cover the shipping fee of the CIEM to you but neither Headfonia or AAW will cover any other expenses such as VAT, import fees, tax, etc. This is all the winner’s responsibility so if you’re not up for that, it’s best not to enter. AAW also won’t lower the unit’s value for shipping.

In order to enter the competition you need to do the following steps:

  • Fill out the form on the page linked below. Use a real full name/surname to enter the contest (partial name entries are no longer accepted) + real email address as this is the address we will use to contact the winner
  • Leave a comment on this post you’re reading here. Any comment is good but I prefer you telling me what got you into good personal audio.

And while you’re at it like the AAW and Headfonia Facebook pages HERE and HERE, if you haven’t already.

The winner will be chosen at random out of those that completed all 2 steps!

AAW Canary

AAW Canary

After signing up you’ll get a personal link to share. For each new participant that enters via your personal link on Twitter, Google+ or Facebook, etc. you get an extra chance to win!  Make sure you share/use the referrer link! By entering the giveaway you agree to the rules shown under the “ENTER” button

Participants will be contacted by email after subscribing, so by participating all entrants also accept us to email them. Do check your spam folder, but if you didn’t get an email you’re still entered. (Gmail addresses receive it slow/late! Don’t request us to check your entry)

The winner of the Canary IEM will be announced next Monday as usual. That means you have till Sunday evening to enter this AAW giveaway!

Thank you AAW for doing this with us! Good luck to everyone!

I got into nice(ish) in ear audio after my crappy Sony Bluetooth headphones died.
After this I got a pair of cheap Chinese iems. Then another one. Then another one; but the fit wasn’t right. So I set on the adventure of making my own ciems, and it has by far been the most fun part of the audiophile hobby for me

Now I have tried a number of headphones and IEM’s and still I get amazed about how much difference in sound and experience you (mostly) get. And I would really like to listen to the Canary’s ????

I am from Singapore. I was first introduced to their company via Social media and quickly fell in love with their CIEMS. I bit the bullet when i had the opportunity and bought my first IEM, the AAW W900 from them and have been using them as my daily driver ever since. Hope this giveaway would be a chance for me to be able to continue my journey with them with a new addition to my W900!

As a kid listening to the radio and hearing how poor it sounded. I had my first stereo and subwoofers at 20 @and 15″ subwoofers in my vehicle by the age of 16. Sadly, I’m still using my pair of Shure e5C’s. (Don’t judge!) I’m desperately in need to upgrade my personal audio CIEM’s!!!

Unlike most people interested in this hobby, I don’t play any instrument, sing in any band or otherwise plan to work as an audio engineer.
I’m just a simple guy who loves listening to music 🙂
My journey began not so long ago, when I was a tween in Vietnam. I had a crush on a classmate who had the voice of an angel who loves to sing. Such talents could hardly stay unnoticed, and eventually she was regularly performing in local public events, with live television broadcasts and some dedicated fans. Being seated right next to her in class, I am definitely one of the few lucky enough to have heard her singing irl, but with her live performances recorded and readily available on the web, I would’ve been a fool to not keep a few of them on me 😛
With the recordings on my old phone and the stock earbuds that came with it, I would be in my room, put the songs on loop, be alone with my thoughts and just loose myself in the music, the mome… Oh wait, something’s off. It didn’t sound like her. I mean, it was someone trying their best to imitate her but did a poor job doing so, lacking the finer details that was present in her everyday singing.
I was adamant that the problem lay in my poor audio equipment for failing to capture her music the way it was meant to be, and so I picked up hi-fi audio as a hobby, and the rest is history 😀
In the end, our paths didn’t crossed (my music illiteracy was probably to blame), and we went separate ways. But from time to time, I still use her recordings as benchmark for my small, but growing collection of IEMs, with my most prized possession being the ER4XR. My drive to recreate the girl’s voice to fit my memory means that my preferred sound signature would be balance and neutral, which the AAW Canary sounds like it would fit perfectly!
Thank you for doing this giveaway, and for reminding me of the good old times 🙂

Incredibly generous of AAW to give away their new flagship.

As for me, I’ve been playing music since I was 5 but as a kid, I’ve always hated listening to recorded instruments, because they sounded so dead and unrealistic to me; Of course I was listening out of $5 throw-away buds at the time. Then one day in high school, I randomly walked into an audio store where the owner was nice enough to let me listen to his HD800 and that changed my life completely. I couldn’t afford it at the time so I saved up for a DT880 but since then I’ve spent thousands pushing for that next 1%.

Went to a local shop and try out some high end stuffs (opened my ears) which later on also unlocked my talent for audio engineering and music production. So good personal audio gear make me realize how I live music so much. Never regret step into the side of the world 🙂 Hope everyone enjoy music and good luck everyone with the lucky draw. 🙂

I love music. One day I bought a pair of Sony IEM to replace my broken old IEM. The sound quality is much better than any other IEM I had before. That was my gateway to good personal audio world.

The good thing about music is you could enjoy it at the price point you could afford. Sure TOTL stuffs exists but that doesn’t mean you have to stop just be because of budget constraints.

I got into personal audio when I purchased my first earphone (audio technica E70) in a headphone shop after trying various iems.
This got me interested into other earphones/headphones as I wanted to explore other brands’ earphones and headphones to try and find out their difference in sonic characteristics when I listen to music.

My father got me into audio at first. He gave me an old pair of Mission 760i’s and explained to me how to setup it up with an old A/V Receiver he had. And they made my music sound so much better than on my phone with some stock earbuds. I started looking for a portable way to get the same kind of fidelity. I started looking at headphones, but I eventually found IEMs from my searches and though they would travel better. I bit the bullet and ordered some Tin T2s that people raved about. Now I am rocking some AR-E10s.

Well I am a big fan of electrostatic speakers and have enjoyed Quad 2905 for 5 years. I am curious about headfi and would like to see if it is possible to find a IEM that will come close to my Quads. I have tried several “ordinary” sets but I found out that I am picky about comfort so IEM might the choose to enter the competition for the Canary coz I read that it use electrostaic technology. I cross my fingers and hope the set will be sent to me here in Denmark…..thanks 🙂

    Hi HF!

What got me into portable audio, I’d say it`s convenience married with great SQ.
The fact that some iems or ciems provide SQ comparable to great full size cans, and you can take them anywhere without bothering the people around you is awesome.
To the point that I recently sold my over-ear headphones and I only use iems.
Now I need this AAW Canary to finally hear a high end iem 🙂
    Thanks!

I used to use cheap $30 earphones, but they only lasted a month each. Being fustrated for the lackluster quality of these kind of IEMs, I decided to spend more for better quality IEMs starting off with the RHA t10i. Great build quality and lasted me a solid 3 years, and I thought the sound quality was decent till I tried more IEMs… And thus my wallet stayed empty ever since.

The need to mix and produce music for my bands, and the time constraints imposed by commuting and my job, meaning I had to start mixing tracks on the train to work, plus a need for In Ear Monitoring at gigs led me to get more heavily interested in high quality portable audio.

What got me into personal audio? Why, music, of course!!! When I was 9 or 10, I would put on The Beatles, ELO, or Chicago and fall asleep. Now, 40 years later, I do the same thing. Life without music would be horrible!!!

The first thing that got me into this toxic (for my wallet) hobby is when I first borrowed my dad’s walkman cassette player in Summer, 1990 (yeah you read it right, cassette). Fell in love with music right on the spot. So, I have been feeding the monster that’s been growing inside me since 30 years ago.

I’m just getting started with Hi-Fi audio. I was buying guitar picks at a store and there was an isle I’ve never looked at before, it was full of headset demos. First one I tried I fell in love, it played a song that I knew very well, so I immediately noticed how live the song sounded. It was balanced, and I could trick my ears into listening every instrument by it’s own thanks to their separation. I had the luck that what I tried was the AKG K52, which at $40 they were just inside my student budget, so without hesitation I picked them up. Now I’m trying to get as much information about headphones and IEMs as I can, and to get my hands on as many of them as I can afford. $2k IEMs are obviously out of the question when it comes to budget, but it would be really nice to get to know how those sound

I first got into great personal audio when a store near my house was doing demos of the q-Jays – I fell in love with these the first time I heard them. I have since spent about half my life with my iems on, all from a chance encounter out of curiosity.

I come from Malaysia / Singapore and it’s so encouraging to see some home talent really shine! Going into a Masters soon, I haven’t had the money for a while to purchase any TOTL iems. I loved the signature of the W900s at a demo and this pair would be a dream to have!

His Infinity home speakers set a standard, and we would often visit the local hifi shop and listen to the McIntosh and B&W set ups. I actually got into headphones before he did, and introduced him to that aspect of the hobby with a pair of Tin T2 Pro’s and a Schiit Fulla. I´ve always loved music, since I have memory, I´ve always been listening.

When I started earning my own money, one of the first things I bought were Bose´s QuietConfort, about 10 years ago, and I loved them, I heard things in music my Ipod earpods didn´t quite catch, I saved some more and bought Bose´s SoundLink III and tought I was listening to the pinnacle of audio, I used to come home from work and listen to jazz on them on bluetooth, and I really tought there was nothing better.

Until one day I tought; there must be something better out there, so I searched on the internet and the first thing I saw were Grados and their open back design which was completly new to me. I kept investigating, and came to find this website, I started reading a lot of reviews and my inicial budget grew from $200 USD to $1,000 USD, I finally decided to buy HiFiMan H400i and a FiiO X5ii, plus a small bulb amp, all thanks to Liven´s reviews.

I completly fell in love with the system, but now I was shure there was more out there to listen to. Since then I´ve bought Seinnheiser hadphones and earphones, Onkyo DAC´s and Elac and KEF loudspeakers.

I´m looking to upgrade my “on the go” gear and I´d love to have some CIEM´s but recently bought an appartement and bought all the furniture so it´s impossible to make this investment.

    Please choose me 🙂

How I really got into this personal music was when I just got really sick of muddy and bad music from speakers, because it takes more effort such as acoustically treating a room, etc. to make them sound good. I first started out with a normal gaming headset, but that was when I really fell in love with personal music. I gave me a whole new sense of Music, and I was amazed by the amount of detail. This, I decided to buy a SE215 for my everyday commute, and never regretted this decision. If I could win this IEM, it would be a huge step up from my current setup, and would make my music listening experience ten times better. I have always heard of friends who have 2BA and 3BA and Hybrid, but never really knew how amazing it sounded like.

I used to use a Sansa Clip modded with Rockbox, to have access to better equalizer/interface settings. The games were kinda cool too. Battery life was nice, and the thing is compact. I got my first for around 25$

They stopped making them and I figured, time to upgrade. I now have Cowon Plenue D, and headphone amp. I really love it. It makes meditating so much nicer.

Headphones do make a difference, so would really love to try the Canary set. KZ brand are not bad but could be better. Happy Mid-Summer!

About 18 years ago, I had to stay in hospital for 2 months for some long treatment. My lovely classmates, knowing that I had the habit of sleeping with a pair of giant Sony vintage speakers next to my bed with music on higher volume than what could be considered “healthy”, passed the hat around the classroom and bought me a Sony DD30 Walkman from the flea market, along with a pair of Sony E818LP earbuds. They also secretly had my high-school crush make 10 ninety-minute long mixtapes from the CD archive of her father. (He was at first a bit protective of his collection but recommended a few songs here and there during the copying process and inadvertently led to my admiration of, pun not intended, Led Zeppelin). It was early 2000s, I wasn’t fluent in English yet and printing stuff was still expensive, so she found all the lyrics for the songs in the mixtapes online and handwrote them all in a notebook for me. What was supposed to be a 2-month nightmare in hospital turned into a teenage paradise for me.

I still regret, (though with a smile on my face) two things to this day:

    1) Not buying more of those cheap E818LPs before they went out of production, as, for the price, they had such a nice, mature sound and,

    2) Not keeping in touch and eventually asking that beautiful girl to marry me. I mean, who writes 200+ pages of lyrics by hand for someone?

What got me into good portable audio was i think my love for music, i’d always traveled to school, studied, and went about most of my day listening to music, and I just LOVED being in my own world, which led me to seek out earphones, headphones, whatever that could just allow me to immerse myself and be drawn into the music. So yeah, I love music and I hope I can win these.

As a kid, my family couldn’t afford a lot of toys. I ended up rewiring my dad’s stereo system over and over again, changing the placement of the components and optimizing the interconnects. We didn’t have many cassette tapes, so I ended up using Scotch tape to cover up the missing tab on old Disney cassettes so that u could record the radio.

Fast forward to today, I get a feeling of nostalgia when I listen to my headphones after my kids have gone to sleep. It’s the one hobby that I have and can enjoy without waking those little cutie pie demons.

I hope to be able to imprint my love of music on my kids because it’s always been a touchstone in my life. Tracks I haven’t heard in a long time always take me back to memories long forgotten. It’s like you can write down the history of a life in a playlist, albeit in my case a very long and boring one.

One day about 8 years ago I realised 2 things.
    1) I can’t afford to upgrade my LP12
    2) Most of my listening is done away from my main home stereo.

I got a better phone, decided to try to find better headphones to use at work, found Head-Fi.
8 years later after a room full of DAPs, Amps DACs and headphones I now know getting true high end sound on the move is achievable and affordable, especially compared to a Linn Keel!

I got into good personal audio as a result of both my musical career and my interest in computers/building/modding them as a teen. As per usual, the gamer side of me gave way to the classic M50x’s followed by the Sennheisers. Linus, HardwareCanucks and them lot definitely paved the way and HeadFi, you guys, Zeos etc nailed it in the coffin (my everlasting broke-ness from audio equipment that is)

I was working in a state agency, and we had free phone calls so at the end of the working day I was so bored that I would call random people from my phone contacts literally, not proud but hey, that’s what happened.

Phoned a childhood friend that I haven’t heard for ages, he told me that he has his own recording studio (it was no surprise since we’re always were into music back in the day). Alongside he mentioned that he’s waiting for a kick ass studio headphone that costs 400 Euro. I went ” aaa shit man, I can’t believe that such a headphone even exist” it was back in 2008. Said that he could get one for me for 150 Euro since he already bought a ton of equipment for his studio from the same guy. It was the AKG K702 which sucked me right in to this hobby. I was rocking the seven-o-two ’till 2014 when I bend the coil pins so hard during hardwire mod that I lost one driver.

It’s been a decade, but I’m still hooked just because of that random phone call.

These look like beautiful iems and really nice to see AAW rising through the ranks! I got into audio when I listened to my friend’s cans and heard things I’d never heard before in my music!

I’ve never looked back since and getting the Canary’s would be amazing.

My first step into audio was a pair of AKG K317 about 12 years ago. Unlike many people here I’m not a musician or audio engineer, but simply interested in sound and music. Through the years I’ve upgraded my gears numerous times and I’ve always had this urge to explore how music could sound differently

I got into high end audio by reading peoples descriptions of their systems and chains. The vivid depictions and genuine excitement got me interested in hearing what they were hearing.

I got into good portable audio because I have young kids and the only time I get to enjoy my music is while they are sleeping. Unfortunately that is also the time to get things done around the house. Hence portable audio 🙂

TOTL iems are very expensive and not everyone (myself included) has a chance of owning one, so I guess this is my only shot of getting my hands on one!

I bough my first IEMs when I needed comfortable detachable earbuds to sleep with (I have hard time without those) and I reaaally liked them. Afterwards I’ve got a better pair for music on the go.
I really appreciate good quality (both sound & looks) and AAW Canary would be such an upgrade from what I have – not something I could get myself 🙂

Thank you Headfonia and AAW for such an awesome chance.
My portable audio journey started when I was in school for the majority of the day, everyday. At home I had plenty of silence to focus on what I was doing, but this was not so on campus. Portable audio was a great way to escape from the many distractions while coding in a school environment. Even after graduating I’ve been trying to find pieces to finish that “perfect” setup (HA! if that could ever happen) to bring along anywhere I go.
Good Luck to all and loving the stories people are sharing.

IO got started when I had to travel to Asia for Work. Different music there aththe time. Startd with a Walkman, then MiniDisc, Then MP3 players or all types. Now have a few DAP’s, some DAC/Amps. Mostly “mid-fi”, bit way more that I ever thought I’d spend. And so much better sound quality that that old walkman; that at the time I though was fantastic !

When I was small I used to get up after bedtime and listen to records with headphones in the dark. Dark Side of the Moon was spooky and sublime. Now when I close my eyes listening to music lying on a sofa in a different country 30 years later I think I’m trying to recapture that feeling. It’s a kind of magic.

Long ago I was lucky enough to spend long hours practicing on a beautiful piano. It taught me that a well crafted, premium work of art is a far cry from your average run-of-the-mill everyday object. Beauty and indifference. I feel the same way now about personal audio equipment. You always deserve better.

  • July 24, 2019

    Jon Campbell

I have slowly but surely gotten better gear over the years, largely at the behest of my folks, who like this kind of thing and tech. in general, they have always been early adopters of gadgets like a BBC computer and Amstrad! So this could be the culmination of a very interesting journey – I don’ know anyone who wouldn’t want electrostatic super tweeters in their ears! Look forward to the draw!

Sounds have always fascinated me but I only been in the audio-hobby for about 2 years and slowly building up my equipment. I am not only a fan of music and audio mixing but also the technologies behind it and the AAW Canary premised of technologies alone is a very interesting product to me. I personally haven’t have the chance to listen to it yet but do like for an opportunity to listen to it.

They match my eyes, they are made for me! All my gear is basically black or silver. Cosmetics apart they have an exceptional spec. I love personal audio because it is personal. It keeps the bad vibes out and keeps the good vibes in. You have got to look after your vibes. They are all we have got. That and our precious bodily fluids. You Kubrick fans out there will know what I mean.

I love the design but Canary? Shouldn’t these be yellow? Or am I seeing green with envy? Are they the canary in a coalmine, or goldmine? Anyway, enough of that. I started with vinyl and a big fat pair of headphones in the 70s. I think the headphones were made by Ross. I just loved that feeling of enclosing my head in music. Thanks to AAW and Headfonia for a superb giveaway.

What really got me going was visiting a huge hifi store with endless head gear from names I had never heard of. It was a real eye and ear opener. I had an epiphany listening to Cannonball Adderley’s Something Else. I didn’t know the name of the track. It’s well named. This appears to be an ultra IEM. It looks like like green lunar rocks, kinda cool, unexpected, like seeing blue ice at the Antarctic.

Have always loved portable audio, however selection and opportunity was abysmal where I grew up. Around 7 years ago, after I moved to Asia, I had owned a pair of Klipsch S4i (which was reasonable given my financial status). My then girl friend (now wife) had gave me a pair of Klipsch X7i as a Christmas present. Though I now own earphones and headphones which are nicer I still have the X7i’s kept as a memento.

I still have my entry level dap – an old 50gb ipod with a dial on the front. These days it’s plugged into an old stereo system in the kitchen and plays through big old speakers. Good enough as BGM for cooking. So my original personal audio has gone retro old world hifi. Out and about I have a Fiio and various ear sets. I’d love for a Canary to come and roost on my head.

I love to listen to music, but don’t often have the time to do it at home. Portable audio allowed me to get time in with music while on the go.

Got my fingers and toes crossed……and eyes crossed. I decided I had to upgrade my gear when I realised my friend’s posh car stereo sounded better than any of the audio I had access to. I guess jealousy is a string motivator!

Got into portable audio after listening to an amazing set of speakers. My cheap IEMs were then just not enough. I wanted something that resembled that experience while on the go and while working!!

Music has always been important to me. When I was a kid, I used to own a sony and an aiwa walkman, both of which I was enjoying a lot. I guess, I always have been in the world of portable audio…

Since a kid, I’ve always been interested in audio quality. My parents Denon/Polk setup in the late 80’s really sucked me in! IEM’s are a lot cheaper to experiment with though.

Listening to tunes on my friends shitty earbuds is what really made me appreciate nice quality audio.

    Faiz Mohammad

I never knew that sound quality could vary so much from headphone to headphone. I once listened to a friend’s audiotechnica m50x’s and I was hooked. I ordered mine on the same month. After some day I thought phone was not enough, so I went up and bought a xdp-30r dap too. The difference in sound was next level. Now I’m saving up for an iem. I wish that it would be so good that I don’t have to spend anymore in audio gears.

I wasn’t allowed to touch my family audio crown jewels. Lovely to own my own. My first big buy was a pair of Sennheisers. The name was somehow reassuringly scientific.

When I was kid it was a treat to be crowned with the big headphones with the fun curly wire! I think that hooked me. I’m told one of my favourite songs was Ringo Starr singing Octopus’ Garden. Oh dear. And Here Comes The Sun. Better. I have moved on in terms of content though I confess I still have an odd soft spot for those songs.

I got hooked on quality audio early. I bought some Sennheiser 424’s with my hard earned money in 1976 from Boulder Sound Gallery when I was in high school. I think they were $75, and my parents thought I was nuts. I soldiered together a Dynaco amp and preamp to drive them (1500 ohm impedance if I recall). Then life happened, and I miss that sound, so I’m starting to dabble again. Good luck to everyone.

First time i hook on a good pair of audio was 19 years ago when i still a student i got curious on a pair of wood headphone. It is an audio technica headphone. I buy an ATH-ESW9 (and i still have it), the difference of sound quality from a regular headphone was blown my mind. Since that day i always hook with my ATH-ESW9, now i’m being a father and i’m still hook with my ATH-ESW9. A good pair of audio and a little time to relax for me is my sweet escape from my hectic life, a solitude.

    All together now….

….please don’t put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band

To be honest…. I used to not think much about having a good portable set up, in fact i was not interested in hi fi audio. But then i struck me, i started to want to appreciate music more than i currently do, and thus i went and fork out for a good pair of can, then it started to snow ball into a decent set up. But i still use a run of the mill ear bud when i go outside. It starts to itch because my home set up was way better than what i have, so i had to upgrade my out of home monitor, thus making my collection worse for my wallet.

Nothing better than the best but we can’t afford that so you do as well as you can. Like a folks of a certain age I test everything with Dark Side/Kind Of Blue, songs like Come Together, plug stuff in and out and see what tickles my ear the sweetest, within budget, within reason.

Never been tickled by a Canary. Tweet Tweet.

What got me into personal audio? Well, when I was a student, I often study in libraries. Even in a quiet environment, I am easily distracted. I needed music in my ear to help me focus. Often the music is just looping. At that time I started off with an iriver mp3 player, Ipod Mini, Ipod Touch, and trusty relatively cheap Sennheiser IEM. I needed something I can listen to that does not disturb anyone else.

Nowadays with full time job, I can now appreciate higher quality Hifi gear better, with my current setup being Fiio M9 and FH5. This IEM is another level again.
