HIBY R3 II Review

Comparisons

Devices similar to the R3 Pro II are not as readily available as they previously were. As such, it has become increasingly challenging to find a direct competitor for this particular model, mainly because the budget space has been taken over by USB dongles. While entry-level DAPs typically command a price point of around $400 or more, we will still take the opportunity to compare the R3 Pro II with other similar offerings in the market. the market.

The previous R3 Pro Saber 2022 DAP was commendable, but the latest version surpasses it in terms of enhanced usability, a simplified UI, and superior design. However, some may question the worthiness of an upgrade. After a thorough comparison, I believe that sticking with the R3 Pro Saber 2022 is a viable option as it offers similar features, albeit without the new volume wheel and 4.4mm output. If you use the standard 3.5mm output or use it for transport, then the new features may not be of considerable significance.

As far as sound quality is concerned, the R3 II is slightly better than the R3 Pro Saber 2022, although the latter is already impressive in its own right. If you require more power to drive your headphones, then the R3 II may be a justifiable alternative. However, if you’re seeking a significant improvement in sound quality, then you may want to consider the latest version or even double your budget to acquire the R5 Gen 2 or a higher-end HIBY model.

Another super-compact DAP, the M0 Pro is a device that we like. It is insanely small with good sound and features. It even offers a 4.4mm BAL out, and although that is via an adapter that Shanling provides, it’s still very impressive.

But if you don’t mind a bit more footprint, getting the new R3 II would be much better. The only scenario to choose the M0 Pro might be sports activities or in cases where you need extreme portability. In other cases, the R3 II is better in every way.

The M1s is simply an upgraded M0 Pro, with a very distinctive and authentic design. It has similar features but what it doesn’t have is HIBY’s MSEB settings, which allow great control over the DSP settings to alter the sound. It also doesn’t have Qobuz support, although Shanling made it possible to use Tidal with the newest update. For form factor, these two are similar. The Shanling’s screen is clearly better though for resolution and colours.

In terms of sound quality, the M1s offers a more musical and full-bodied sound with a richer tonality, while the R3 II provides a more neutral and realistic audio experience, which is better suited for hardcore audiophiles. The R3 II has a brighter and more spacious soundstage, with a more realistic tonality, akin to a professional studio approach. The M1s, on the other hand, delivers a musical sound with a full-bodied tone that is smooth and likeable. Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to personal preferences and the type of headphones or in-ear monitors one possesses.

Conclusion

The HIBY R3 II is a highly viable option for individuals in search of a compact, feature-rich DAP with streaming capabilities. Priced at a reasonable $179, this device offers an impressive array of features, including a sophisticated, neutral sound quality, which is essential to many discerning listeners.

Furthermore, the HIBY R3 II is an excellent transport option, serving a purpose beyond that of a mere DAP. Its versatility is evidenced by its ability to stream audio from a phone, using the UAPP app, to DACs, all while occupying minimal space. This eliminates the need for additional applications and allows users to bypass their phones altogether, providing a seamless, efficient experience.

This is a recommended tiny DAP for sure. To our Recommended Buy List it goes!

Pros:
  • Good packaging
  • Cute design with an aluminium frame
  • Tidal & Qobuz streaming
  • Neutral, spacious sound
Cons:
  • The volume wheel feels flimsy
  • The screen is unimpressive
  • The treble response needs more sparkle

He tries to keep his photography enthusiasm at the same level as audio. Sometimes photography wins, sometimes his love for music takes over and he puts that camera aside. Simplistic expressions of sound in his reviews are the way to go for him. He enjoys a fine single malt along with his favourite Jazz recordings.

Hi Berkhan, thank you for your detailed review. I actually bought the Hiby R3 II and ended up sending it back…for me the soundstage was very very small, like everything happening right between my ears. I actually preferred the sound of my KA5 or my Plenue D a lot more and less tiring. Also I tried a Sony NW-A306 that had a very spacious presentation, very immersive sound.
Do other Hiby Players have the same sound signature?
