Devialet Gemini Review

Devialet Gemini

Sound performance

For this review, I mostly used my iPhone as a source. This IEM is made for travelling and commuting, so it doesn’t really make sense to connect a high-end DAP to them, or a domestic source. I also added the FiiO M11S in the mix, for aptX, but frankly, most people will stick with a phone.

Overall signature

Are the Devialet Gemini audiophile-grade? Frankly, quite almost!

Okay, sound doesn’t feel exactly natural due to all of the various computation at work, but you’d have to be in bad faith to say that those new Gemini sound anything but good. Even compared to my lovely AirPods Pro 2, I do feel like those TWS take the upper hand in some aspects. Bass are stronger, as you’d expect from the brand, and on some tracks there’s even a little too much of it – but nothing that you can’t fix with a quick EQ settings in the app. Highs are crisp and if voices don’t enjoy all the benefits of “Atmos” systems from the Tidal or Apple Music, the soundstage remains quite impressive with a lot of headroom.

Clearly, the EAM or IDC does some wonders here and, paired with, the new driver, this was a real surprise in every way and the result is a TWS that should satisfy 90% of listeners. The sound signature is, of course, a bit too “rich” but dynamic range is phenomenal for a TWS so that’s a good trade-off in my opinion. To be fair, the Gemini are still tuned to flatter your ears, pushing the lower frequencies upfront and giving the voices this airy, but exaggerated sensation of spaciousness. Thankfully, after some quick setting, the Gemini became more balanced, more detailed, fixing almost all of the prior caveats.

And, thanks to the powerful noise-canceling I was surprised to hear details that I could find on much higher-end gear, in difficult environments such as the train or crowded spaces – even at very low volume. Transients are fast, dynamic range is great, ADSR is excellent, and even compared to the mighty Sennheiser, or the AirPods 2 or even the Hifiman Svanar Wireless, the Devialet really shines here, all thanks to its powerful CPU. I couldn’t feel a difference switching from transparency mode to noise-canceling, and even ambient electro from Anyma or hard hitting from Charlotte Dewitte were played with ease.

All-in-all, a delightful experience and definitely one of the best-sounding TWS I have listen to this year. And if you take into account the price, this is – for me – the best sounding wireless IEM you could get up to €/$300, together with the AirPods Pro 2.

Tonality

Highs: clean computation. The Gemini is never aggressive but can be a little bit too V-shaped out ot the box. It’s super clean, with quick transients and phenomenal pan effects with the right recordings, and after a little check in the app, it gets much (much) better.

Good test-track: Strobe Lights (feat. Kilian & Jo) – Henry Green remix

Mediums: spacious with clean vocals. Clearly, the Gemini are showing off in this area. The DSP always tries to put the voices upfront, like the bass. There’s no real bump but, the more you listen to them, the more you’ll discern those slight magnifications. It’s still a bit too forced, but that’s what make those ears addictive

Good test-track: Unstable Gravity – Colyn

Lows: Phantom of the Opera . Whether if you set the noise-canceling, or sound transparency on, you’ll get powerful, deep, clean bass. These earphones can handle electro tracks like champs and even tackled the like of Svanar with their topology drivers. The SOC is doing miracles here and I’m sure that you’ll be surprised by how powerful, and delightful, the bass can get.

Good test-Track: To the Moon and Back – Boris Brejcha

Conclusion

For €179, the Devialet Gemini is the best TWS you can get at the moment. Sound is great, noise-canceling is superb, software’s integration is good and with the app, you can match or even exceed almost all of its competitors.

Design and build quality is equally good, with the only drawback being their easy wear-off, especially if you try to run or do any kind of sports with them. During cold weather this should not be an issue at all, but for me that tended to happen quite regularly.

Still, it’s hard not to recommend these TWS IEMs and if you should get one and only one versatile TWS below the €200-300 threshold, this would be the one!

Pros

  • very good sounding, amazing with the EQ
  • excellent noise cancelling, good transparency
  • good battery life and sturdy case
  • fancy design
  • exceptional price/performances ratio

Cons

  • easy to fall (at least for me)
  • no LDAC or aptX HD
  • case and earbuds are a bit too big

I have purchased multiple Devialet Phantoms (upgraded from white to silver to gold) and I deeply regret the purchase. It has been the worst, most frustrating experience – Devialet does NOT make good software and they REALLY do not take accountability for any glitches on their end. Their customer service is the worst in the audio business. Just one customer’s experience, but I would like to spare others the headache.

We’ll I’ve bought DEVIALET products from their resellers in Melbourne, Australia. I received excellent, knowledgeable customer service. Both resellers are audiophile retailers known for their expertise and customer care. I guess it really matters where you buy and how much they value their customers!
