Today we review the FiiO R9, an all-in-one flagship music streamer from FiiO, which goes for $1,499 USD.
Disclaimer: The FiiO R9 was sent to me by FiiO. Many thanks for the opportunity. This review reflects my honest opinion as always.
FiiO
FiiO is a brand that needs no introduction, it is a well-renowned player in the world of audio. In case you’re not aware of them yet, you can quickly visit their store or official website to get acquainted with their line of products. FiiO boasts a vast range of portable audio devices and strives to compete in every field it operates in.
We’ve reviewed dozens of FiiO gear over the years and you can check them out here.
FiiO R9
The FiiO R9 is a versatile all-in-one desktop device that can function as a streamer, DAC, DAC/Amp, DAP, and transmitter, depending on your audio needs. It aims to provide the ultimate desktop HiFi experience, eliminating the need for other devices to construct an audio chain. With the R9, you have every possible option in a single package.
It is the upper-grade model of the previous R7, which I reviewed below:
FiiO is currently focusing on attracting a specific audience who require a complete solution, particularly for desktop setups. This has led them to explore the keyboard market, release speakers such as the SP3, and launch full-size headphones like the FT5. In this context, the FiiO R9 serves as the central component of the entire system. It allows you to stream music, play local files, use wireless capabilities, or simply decode music through its pure DAC function.
In terms of inputs and outputs, well, let’s simply say that the R7 has got you covered. Let me just show you what inputs/outputs you have on the back side of the unit in the below diagram, so it would be easier to understand:
The device has an impressive range of outputs, covering everything from optical to XLR. FiiO has done a remarkable job of putting all possible scenarios into one device. On the front, you can find 6.35 and 4.4 phone outs, along with an XLR out.
Packaging
Despite being a big desktop unit, the packaging is surprisingly compact and arrives in a hard cardboard box, and the important ingredients are as below:
- AC Power Cable
- USB Cable
- RM3 Bluetooth Remote
- 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter
- Two Silicone Bases and Four Adhesives
- A Replaceable AC Fuse
FiiO did not supply its RM3 Remote controller with the R7, which was a drawback of the previous model. It’s refreshing to see the accessory included in this iteration since operating the device from afar is very important. That aside, the packaging and all the necessary accessories are very rich and satisfying.
