Lavricables Grand Line Review

Sound Intro

In the audiophile community, the discussion about the effectiveness of upgrade cables for headphones and in-ear monitors is a polarizing topic, often dividing enthusiasts into two camps. On one side are the believers, those who are convinced of the tangible improvements in sound quality these high-end cables bring. They contend that cables made from superior materials can elevate the listening experience by enhancing micro-details and altering the sound’s tonality. This group typically includes seasoned audiophiles who trust their ability to notice these nuanced differences and customize their audio setups accordingly.

Conversely, there are skeptics who maintain that any differences in sound quality are imperceptible, and thus, the high cost of these cables is unwarranted. Their arguments are grounded in scientific research and tests, frequently pointing to the absence of measurable improvements in audio quality between standard and premium cables. They suggest that any perceived enhancements are more likely due to expectation bias or the placebo effect.

Despite these ongoing debates, the allure of upgrade cables remains strong. They often symbolize an audiophile’s commitment to their craft, representing a deep-seated passion for the ultimate audio experience. It’s crucial to recognize, however, that perceived improvements in sound quality are highly subjective and can vary significantly from one individual to another. The debate continues, but one thing is certain: whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, the realm of audiophile upgrade cables is intriguing.

As an enthusiast in this field since 2010, my personal stance on cables is quite defined. I endeavor to remain objective, ensuring equal testing conditions and paying close attention to detail. I regularly use two devices for testing, particularly when evaluating source devices sent to me. For instance, the Vision Ears VE7 initially didn’t impress me with its stock cable. But after trying an upgrade cable with it, my opinion changed significantly. Over the past decade, I’ve had numerous similar experiences, which kept me open-minded about rational cable upgrades.

So, what constitutes a rational approach to cable upgrades? Firstly, if you’re using just a phone without a quality source device (like a DAC, DAC/AMP, or DAP) and are hoping a cable will enhance your favorite IEMs or headphones, this might not be the right direction. Before contemplating a cable upgrade, it’s essential to first invest in a good pair of IEMs or headphones and a reliable source device. Consider cable upgrades as the icing on the cake. This has been my philosophy for over a decade. I respect both sides of this debate – the believers and the non-believers. Everyone has their perspective. The world of audiophile upgrade cables is vast and varied, offering space for all viewpoints.

Sound & Performance

Lavricables Grand Silver Cable with Yanyin Moonlight Ultra

The Yanyin Moonlight Ultra responds notably to cable upgrades, though it’s a challenging IEM to pair due to its sensitivity to cable-induced tonal changes. It comes with a silver and graphene-plated copper litz cable, and I’ve found that many cables either make its sound too thin and artificial or fail to significantly improve upon the stock cable. However, the Lavricables Grand Line Silver pairs impressively with the Moonlight Ultra. The midrange and treble, often thinned out by other cables, maintain a realistic tonality with the Grand Line. Contrary to the typical effect of silver cables, it doesn’t reduce the bass quantity but rather enhances its texture.

With the Grand Silver, the midrange becomes more transparent and slightly more forward, improving vocal clarity and transparency. The resolution of the overall signature is subtly uplifted. The upper midrange remains consistent in quantity, but the extension feels more relaxed and refined. The cable notably enhances the spaciousness and airiness of the sound, which is particularly valuable in tribrid IEMs.

Lavricables Grand Silver Cable with Vision Ears VE7 & Comparison to Ultimate Line

Previously, I noted that the Ultimate Line paired with the VE7 slightly reduced the sub-bass and brought the mids forward, enhancing the resolution of the upper mids and highs for a cleaner, more energetic sound.

In contrast, pairing the VE7 with the Grand Line results in a fuller bass, slightly thicker mid-bass, and midrange while keeping the upper midrange and treble quantity intact. It enhances the resolution and transparency of the upper midrange and treble without altering their quantity, which suits my preference for their extension. The soundstage width feels marginally larger with the Grand Line, and the depth remains similar. Instrument positioning is clearer and more precise. Both cables perform excellently, and the price difference of $200-250 from the Ultimate Line is justifiable with the right pairing.

Comparison with Effect Audio Cadmus ($199)

For this comparison, I’m using the ThieAudio Prestige LTD. The Effect Audio Cadmus, a 4-braid UP-OCC Silver Plated Copper cable in a litz configuration, is similar in form to the Grand Line.

From top to bottom:  Lavri Ultimate Silver, EA Cadmus, ddHifi Nyx, Lavri Grand Silver

The Cadmus emphasizes the lower mid and mid-bass regions, resulting in a thicker sound. However, it doesn’t introduce the same level of airiness as the Grand Line, regardless of pairing. The Cadmus and LTD combination produces a robust, impactful bass. In contrast, the Grand Line Silver upgrade cable offers slightly less bass but with a quicker, snappier response. The overall resolution of the Grand Line feels higher, more transparent, and more accurate.

Comparison with ddHifi Air Nyx ($399)

The ddHifi Air Nyx upgrade cable consists of four cores of different alloys, including type II litz pure silver, oxygen-free copper, and litz silver-plated over single-crystal copper. It’s a hybrid cable that subtly refines the overall sound signature, offering a respectable overall improvement. The Air Nyx tightens the bass, enhancing its dynamism and agility, which adds extra air to the mids. It also improves midrange articulation and airiness, though not as much as the Grand Line. The Grand Line stands out as the more vivid option, introducing more significant changes to the sound.
