FiiO JH3 Review

Bundle

Inside the box

For a $45 IEM, I didn’t expect much in terms of bundle. And so I was pretty surprised to see the various accessories provided with the JH3. Out of the box, you get:

  • the FiiO JH3
  • a set of silicon sleeves + memory foams
  • a crystal case for travel (the same found with the FH3)
  • a monocrystalline copper, 4 strands / 120 wires cable, with 3.5mm termination

A good bundle for the price, but if you want more, you shall look for something a bit more expensive, like the FiiO FD3 Pro.

Additional accessories

If you want to go further with your FiiO JH3, there are only two upgrades you should do:

  • get a DAP or a DAC to drive them nicely
  • get a balanced cable (in 2-pin socket), to fit your FiiO KA3

It could be something as small as a ddHiFi TC44A or something a bit more fancy like the FiiO KA3, but please don’t use your computer headphone out (unless it’s the new MacBook Pro, which is pretty impressive in this regard).

Specifications

For the nit-pickers and nerdy ones here, I’m giving the specs and technical sheets. For all the others, you can just go lower to see how the FiiO JH3 performs.

Dual BA driver + 13.6mm Dynamic Driver

Even if the FiiO JH3 is an entry-level IEM, that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the same features found in upper models.

Made from “carefully chosen” materials, the composite diaphragm of the new 13.6mm wide dynamic driver – a big increase is driven by a powerful neodymium magnet driver, with a CCAW voice coil, for “vigorous forceful bass”. Borrowed from the upper model, minus de Beryllium coating, this driver offers a 20% increase in terms of magnetic flux, compared to the precedent generation.

In addition to that, the JH3 enjoys a set of dual BA drivers, specially designed for this model, to ensure “a cohesive sound, without disjointed treble and mids – or simply put, they should cover the full frequency range, without displaying any “gap” between the upper and lower mid-range. FiiO promises lush mids and “potentially dynamic bass”.

To that two features, you can also add the usual “balanced pressure system” now available across the whole FiiO range, and introduced on the FiiO FD5. This setup offers numerous benefits like:

  • less air pressure on the eardrum
  • reduced distortion for cleaner bass
  • deeper bass at low volume

And a quick look at the tuning response, and you know that FiiO didn’t intend to make a lively IEM, like the JD3, but rather more of a linear one – on the cheaper side.

Sensitivity / Hiss

Impedance is very low (28ohm), sensitivity is good (106dB/mW), so you should have no problem driving those IEMs with your usual DAP, even your phone.

On my FiiO KA3, the IEM behaves exceptionally well. Same with my ddHiFi TC44B or even plugged into my computer, all were able to drive the IEM with ease, even in noisy environments.

Last but not least, hiss never was an issue, but that was expected.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. Even after more than 10 years of experience, Nanotechnos still collects all gear he gets, even his first MPMAN MP3 player. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing(ly boring) numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.

Friends, Learn from my experience. Please please don’t buy FiiO JH3. It sounds pathetic. You will feel like hearing from tweeters. Treble is very harsh.

I used JH3 for three days and the connector pin is broken. The technical team mentioned that JH3 cannot be repaired. I was trying to wear the JH3 and the connector pin is broken. Very very poor quality from FiiO. Now JH3 is gone waste within 3 days. I am completely disappointed and feel cheated.
