HiBy R8 II Review

Synergy

When paired with the Sony IER-Z1R in balanced mode, the HiBy R8 II demonstrates its prowess in taming and balancing the IEM’s inherent bass characteristics. While the Sony IER-Z1R is known for its full and musical sound signature, the R8 II complements it by providing a more balanced bass response. This synergy between the R8 II and the Sony IER-Z1R highlights the DAP’s versatility and ability to accommodate a wide range of IEMs and headphones, particularly those with warmer and fuller sound signatures.

Indeed, the Annihilator 2023 is also one of the best matches for the R8II. It is an IEM-renowned for its coloured and dynamic sound, and the R8 II pairs perfectly well with a more subdued and neutral approach. It also has good amplification, especially in Turbo Mode, so I think this pairing is a no-brainer.

Now let’s check out the Hifiman Arya Stealth. When using the balanced mode, the volume may need to be turned up compared to in-ear headphones. However, this is no problem for the R8 II when driving the headphones at a loud volume in normal balanced mode. In balanced mode, the sound is spacious and airy, with good timbre and fast decay. The Arya and R8 II setup produce a very neutral and mid-forward, yet technically strong sound that extends well. However, it might come too flat or colourless to some degree, especially if you’re more into ZMF-type headphones with more warmth and body.

With the Sony MDR-Z1R in Turbo Mode, the performance is very impressive. Again, just like its IEM counterpart, the Z1R headphone is a bassy one, but the R8 II matches it very well with great refinement. I think this is a formidable and reasonably mobile setup in a closed environment. The HD800 S pairing brings similar results, although the Sennheiser is less bassy and more airy sounding than the Sony.

It appears that the R8 II is capable of driving a wide range of full-sized headphones, particularly from the balanced output with Turbo Mode, High Gain, and Class A Amp Mode. However, it should not be expected to replace a complete desktop system with a full-size DAC + Amp. Nonetheless, its performance is exceptional and allows for greater mobility in a closed environment. You can disconnect from your desktop system and simply lie on a sofa to enjoy your music.

End Words

The HiBy R8 II sets a new standard for neutral-sounding DAPs, especially below the 2000$ range. Its super dark background, precise stereo imaging, and spacious soundstage create an immersive listening experience that remains faithful to the recording. With its honest and uncoloured reproduction, the R8 II invites you to rediscover your music with newfound clarity.

With its premium build, advanced technical specifications, and great sound performance, the HiBy R8 II stands as a good example of the brand’s dedication to advancing the realm of portable audio. We recommend the HiBy R8 II to audiophiles and music enthusiasts seeking a higher-end digital audio player with a neutral sound. It will be added to our DAP Recommendations. Kudos to HiBy.

Thanks for the great review. It would be interesting to compare in terms of r2r sound with the AK se300 which is perhaps the direct competitor in terms of price. Thank you.

In your opinion (and tests), what has the biggest influence on this “neutrality” in the sound signature, mostly the DAC or the AMP section?

Hello, is it possible to compare this device – HiBy R8 II with such outstanding devices as Chord Electronics Hugo 1,2 or even Chord Electronics Hugo TT2. And if possible, does the HiBy R8 II, in your subjective opinion, surpass them in sound or not?
