Cheating

When you’re running a site like Headfonia you’re always listening to gear you have to analyze and review. That means I only very rarely have time to just pick one of my favorite albums and listen to it for fun. For the last few months however, ever since the bug bit me back in January, I have been spending my free time with my Pro-Ject Turntable and my 25 year old B&W speakers.

For some reason putting on a record and listening to it on my speaker system is more relaxing then listening to digital files or vinyl on headphones. Don’t get me wrong, I still love that and I do that for a lot of hours on a daily basis but with my busy schedule it is nice some times to just sit in the couch with a glass of Maker’s Mark and chill with my cats on my lap. Like this exact moment while I’m writing this (Lana de Rey – Honeymoon).

If you’re a fan of female vocals, I suggest you check out Anna Ternheim on Spotify, Tidal or whatever you’re using to stream music. Poor yourself a nice glass of whiskey and just relax. You’ve earned it.

Not to mention, that a glass of whiskey (or rum in my case, try “Diplomático, Reserva Exclusiva”) improves the sound quality more than any amplifier.

Can’t agree with you more Lieven. I have a cheap Crosley Cr83 Stac-O-Matic LP player, which I hook on to a Polk audio RTI-A5 speakers (via Yamaha A-S 500 Int. Amp) occasionally and it is always a memorable experience.

We are so much exposed to the digital world these days that going back to a full analog setup has become like a nostalgic thing. And in terms of sound, I feel that LPs have a better dynamic range, much deeper than digital minus the clean digital CD sound but with more detail somehow. Recently I have been hearing some Dhaffer Youssef, XTC and Wes Montgomery in above mentioed setup. If possible check them out.
