Everyday use

On the go

Like the Accentum I reviewed just before, on a daily basis, the Sennheiser True Wireless 4 are surprisingly efficient, even brilliant if I had to say.

The first launch was quite simple and you will either be able to connect the ears directly to your smartphone, via the usual Bluetooth set-up, or download Sennheiser’s Smart control app, which unlocks various options like :

  • connection management, to see which devices you connected to your TWS,
  • equalizer, to adjust the sound to your liking
  • transparent hearing, if you want to hear your surroundings while wearing your TWS,
  • noise-cancellation, to set the level of noise-attenuation you want to use
  • monitor your TWS/charging box battery life

Bluetooth pairing is blazing fast. Once you’ve paired your headset, it’ll automatically connect to your phone and I was pleasantly surprised to see the Momentum systematically pair with my iPhone every time I turned on the headset.

Same goes for the overall ergonomics. If I pested at the Momentum 4 and TW2 for their bugginess, none of that ever happened with the Momentum Wireless 4, which worked as intended, from start to finish, offering even more options than the TW3, with no visible flaws.

Like their predecessor, the TW4 embed a sensitive area – the faceplate – that you have to press, touch or swipe to activate. Many options can be setup through the app, but by default, here are the available options:

Right Earbud

  • one tap to play/pause your music
  • two tap to get to the next track
  • three tap to activate the voice assistant
  • Hold to increase the volume level

Left Earbud

  • one tap to activate the transparency mode / ANC mode
  • two tap to get the previous track (left earbud)
  • raise / lower the volume with the dedicated buttons
  • Hold to decrease the volume level

Isolation / Transparency mode

With each generation, Sennheiser hone their skill and enhance their active noise-cancellation. If still not perfect, even more when compared with the AirPods Pro Max 2 or the Devialet Gemini 2, I have to admit that this new version is more capable than the previous one.

Head to head, the ANC span across a wider range and seems to block a lot more unwanted sound than the TW3, especially in the train or in the street. You still hear a few spikes here and there, but If you commute a lot, subway/train/plane, the Momentum Wireless 4 remains one of the best TWS you can get in this price range.

The fact that you can modulate the level of noise cancellation is more of a gimmick for me, but it seems that many listeners prefer having control over this aspect, depending on the situation they are in.

Sadly, the Transparency mode remains underwhelming. Despite Sennheiser latest TWS effort, the experience is disappointing at best. It’s not terrible per se, but even at a low level, there’s far too much white noise to really make them usable.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. Even after more than 10 years of experience, Nanotechnos still collects all gear he gets, even his first MPMAN MP3 player. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing(ly boring) numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.

I just read a comment on Amazon where the guy says this earphone’s Bluetooth will not pair with Windows or Mac computers, only with Apple or Android phones. That is a huge limitation.
