Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Review

Today we review the fourth iteration of a Sennheiser famous TWS, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4, selling for €299 Euro.

About Sennheiser

Founded in 1945, Sennheiser is one of the eldest, and most respected, audio brands on the market. With billions of headphones and IEMs sold over the year, and legendary headsets like the Orpheus or the HD-25, the German brand remains a reference for audiophiles and professionals, even after more than 75 years of existence.

Yet, in 2021, Andreas and Daniel Sennheiser decided to sell the consumer electronic division (AKA audio and audiophiles headphones) to Sonova – a Swiss brand specialized in aid-hearing devices – and focus on their pro division. An unexpected move that sounded like the end of an era for many of us, prepared to witness the decline of the Behemoth that is/was Sennheiser. But, in the end the catalog remained – almost – untouched. HD800S? Still here. HD820? Rocking and alive. HD660S even evolved into the HD660S II, and only lesser models like the HD450BT quietly took the way out.

Meanwhile, the brand focused its attention toward a whole new venture: cinema soundbar, with the highly acclaimed Ambeo and Ambeo mini. A shift that made me perplexed at first, but after trying them for my own personal pleasure, I have to concur: they’re amazing. Yet, the biggest change didn’t came from the inside, but from the outside.

In fact, like every manufacturer out there, Sennheiser faced an unattended opponent, more known for their phones, than for their earphones: Apple. A rival who took over the market with a single product, the AirPods, which replaced almost every portable headphone or IEMs, by TWS.

An industrial shockwave that forced almost every brand to adapt, Sennheiser being no exception. And if the brand already some solution with the Sennheiser Momentum and Momentum True Wireless, their terrific sound performances remained plagued by various software issues. Then came the gen 2, with some fixes and the same sound prowess, but still not on par with what the competion offered on a software level. Followed, the Gen 3, the first Momentum sold under the new Sennheiser-Sonova era, refining the formula to some extent, but we now have the latest generation: the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4, packed with everything the brand has to offer.

Fourth time is the charm? Time to find out!

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless had a rough start. Sound-wise, those TWS were simply sublime, outperforming many if not all of its competitors, but in the background, things were not as bright. Plagued with various software issues, the Momentum TWS suffered from battery depletion and Bluetooth disconnection, both with the source or just between them.

Thankfully, the V2 fixed many of those issues – especially the battery one – and kept the great sound offered by the V1. Then came the Momentum True Wireless 3, which gained a more streamlined shell, enhanced battery life, and a better ANC. They are now replaced by the MTW4, but since the brand offers them at a discount price nowadays, I kept them in for this review.

I reviewed them a few months ago, and I quite like them (especially with their discount price):

Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 4 is a full-fledged Bluetooth headphone, designed to offer great sound performance and solid noise-canceling for both audiophiles and remote workers – lucky me, I tick all the boxes. New iconic design, new features, and the promise of a better sound to “Let nothing stand in the way of your listening pleasure”.

Senn sent me a pair for review, and here’s a quick excerpt:

“The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless is a great Bluetooth headphone, plagued by some software issues. And that’s a shame because sound-wise the headphone could easily be one of my favourite ones in this price range, even against some of the most famous models.

On top of that, if the new Sennheiser/Sonova association seemed to save on materials – less metal, more plastic, which is kind of a bummer for me – the end result is one of the comfiest headphones I had the chance to try recently. But with one of the worst ANC, I ever used.”

For information: I tried a commercial pair recently in an audio store, and the ANC seemed better, so I may do a retry with all the new software updates.

Sennheiser Accentum Wireless

First of its generation, the Sennheiser Accentum is the first headphone fully-developed under the Sonova era. Designed as an affordable alternative to the Momentum 4 – like the HD4.50BT before – with smaller drivers and the same ANC chip, this new model offers a lot of good features for a sub-€200 bluetooth headphone.

I bought one for review purpose, and here’s a quick excerpt:

“For €179, it’s hard not to love what the Sennheiser Accentum Wireless has to offer.

With a powerful sound, exceptional long-standing battery life, great comfort and simple controls, the headphone stands as the best Bluetooth headphone I tried, in recent years. Keeping almost all of what made the Momentum 4 Wireless great, minus the bugs (yeah) and the highs (ohh) this new model feels like the best option, for anyone seeking an affordable, but great-sounding headphone.

ANC is better, if not perfect, but I’m pretty sure that the next version will have that fixed – or so I hope! Keep it on Senn/Sonova!”

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4

“Hear more than music”, that’s the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 tagline, fourth iteration of the brand’s TWS uptake. Packed with future-proof technologies likes Auracast and various optimizations, they are now the new herald for the brand, the one that should fix all of the previous generations flaws, for our hearing pleasure.
