TrueResponse driver + proprietary DSP

Sennheiser always stood against multi-driver IEM, stating that kind of system introduces phase incoherence and unwanted distortion, so it’s no surprise to find a dynamic driver at the heart of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4.

In fact, the brand embedded the same transducer found in the IE500 Pro and IE600: a 7mm wide TrueResponse dynamic driver. A driver advertised as “one of the world’s smallest high-performance dynamic drivers, with a diaphragm of only 7 mm in diameter to cover the entire frequency spectrum. A custom-made magnet system with triple-channel ventilation significantly reduces the distortion factor. Even at high sound pressure levels, the sound remains clean and free of distortion”.

Among that, Sennheiser perfected the DSP and gave their internal circuitry some small, but welcome improvements when used with the ANC mode on – which is how most users will do I hope. They shouldn’t be big changes compared to the previous model, but we’ll have to check on that later.

Bluetooth

If the TW3 added aptX Adaptive support to ensure the best performances, the TW4 add Bluetooth 5.4 compatibility, LE Audio and Auracast. If the latest feels more like a technological flex than anything else – this technology allows you to instantly connect to Auracast stream, during silent concerts for example – the important feature here remains the fact that the Sennheiser support every level of aptX, to ensure full 24-bit support on compatible devices, or AAC on iPhone (no LDAC here)

Battery life

Sennheiser claims 7h30 of continuous listening on a single charge and more than 30h with the case. A full charge takes 1.5h, but charging just 8 minutes offers you 1h of playback, so you should never run out of music.

In real-life usage, the Momentum is quite close to the official numbers, and I reached between 26 to 28h – more than enough on the go. Bonus point the for the Qi-Wireless compatibility, a must-have nowadays.

Microphone

Last but not least, a quick note regarding the microphone. Sennheiser put three mics per earbuds, all with beamforming to capture the most accurate sound while speaking. I did a few phone calls and I found them superior to the AirPods Pro in this regard: my interlocutor always heard me loud and clear. Kudos Senn!
